Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

FIA World Rally Championship

Finnish party in France – Latvala/Anttila claim historic victory

Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) made history in winning the Rally France. The Volkswagen duo is the first Finnish pair for just under 15 years to win an all-asphalt round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) finished runner-up to complete the historic result, while third place went to the Citroën duo Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle (GB/IRL). Latvala/Anttila’s fourth win of the season keeps the title race alive in the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ Championship. A faulty sensor and a mistake made when submitting the time card resulted in Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) finishing down in 13th place at their home WRC event. However, the reigning world champions did win the Power Stage to pick up three bonus points.

Rast/van der Linde finish tenth and fourth to wrap up title

René Rast (D) and Kelvin van der Linde (ZA) clinched the title in the ADAC GT Masters on the final race weekend at the Hockenheimring. Tenth place in the opening race on Saturday was sufficient to put the duo in the Audi R8 LMS ultra out of reach in the championship. Rast and South African van der Linde, 2013 Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup champion, benefitted from a mistake during a pit stop from fellow title contender Jaap van Lagen (NL), who subsequently finished outside the points. “It was a thriller, and an emotional rollercoaster,” said Rast, who won the 2005 Polo Cup for Volkswagen Motorsport. “After the start the corners of our mouths were drooping somewhat at first, but we were able to breathe more easily in the second half of the race and were celebrating come the end.” In Sunday’s second race, Rast/van der Linde came home fourth. Victory in both races went to the Corvette duo Andreas Wirth/Daniel Keilwitz (D/D).

Marschall wins twice, Günther is second overall

Dennis Marschall (D) won two of the three races at the final round of the ADAC Formula Masters at the Hockenheimring. The 18-year-old came home ahead of Maximilian Günther (D) in race one – a result that saw Günther secure second place in the overall standings with two races remaining. Third place went to Denmark’s Mikkel Jensen, who had already won the title in the junior single-seater series “powered by Volkswagen” on the previous race weekend at the Sachsenring. Jensen finished ahead of Marschall and Sweden’s Joel Eriksson in race two. Marschall then hit back in the final race on Sunday afternoon, winning ahead of Tim Zimmermann (D) and Jensen.

Tan bags brace of wins at season finale

Weiron Tan (MAL) won two races at the season finale of the ATS Formula 3 Cup at the Hockenheimring. The 20-year-old, at the wheel of a Dallara Volkswagen fielded by the Van Amersfoort Racing team, won Saturday’s opening race, finishing ahead of Indy Dontje of the Netherlands and Tan’s compatriot Nabil Jeffri. The second race was won by Markus Pommer (D). The 23-year-old from Heilbronn had already wrapped up the championship two weeks ago at the Sachsenring. Pommer was followed over the finish line by Dontje and Jeffry. Tan picked up his second win of the weekend in Sunday’s third and final race on Sunday, which was held in 17 degrees Celsius and slightly overcast conditions. Dontje was second again, with Britain’s Sam Macleod coming home third.

Defi Baticonfort wins twice in Ledenon

The Defi Baticonfort team tasted success not once, but twice on the penultimate race weekend of the Volkswagen Fun Cup France. The racing series, which features modified replicas of the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, held two 3.5-hour races at the circuit in the south of France. Defi Baticonfort won both races with its trio of drivers Julien Menard/Julien Suzanna/Pascal Amand, finishing ahead of the Groupe Lemoine team (Alain Ferté/Benoit Dupassage) and Defi BMW (Alban Parriaud/Philippe Cimadomo/Grégory Guilvert). The championship is now set for a showdown between Defi Baticonfort and Group Lemoine on the final race weekend in Nogaro (F). The eight-hour race will take place on 19th October.

2018 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster Review

“Supercars just don’t excite me anymore.” These words, spoken to me over a month ago by another journalist, friend, and (so-called) enthusiast were echoing in my head for far too long, but they’ve finally been drowned out. Drowned out by the wail of a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine mounted in the middle of the new Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster. My friend’s point is that back in the good old days, there was a crop of supercars that captured the imagination with amazing style, sounds, performance, and more. Today, it seems like everything is capable of supercar performance, with large luxury sedans outdoing some of the best and most dedicated teams of car nuts, while former pillars of automotive excellence are suddenly pumping out family-friendly SUVs. Beyond that, another league of supercars, dubbed hypercars have cropped up with hybrid gas-electric powertrains that make magical things happen quickly, but at the cost of the acoustic drama, visual flair, and engag...

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

When we last left you, the humble little SportWagen was fresh from the development process with our friends at AWE Tuning, sporting a new downpipe, exhaust and intake, allowing things to breathe a bit easier.  The car sounded great, but there was no getting around the fact that our wagon was still quite, well, slow.   While we realize that nothing we do to the Golf SportWagen at this point will make it a race car, we still felt compelled to do something .  To put it bluntly, we had a fever, and the only cure was more power. Flash forward a few hours, and we found ourselves at Waterfest, staring down APR’s palatial spread and the numerous tuned vehicles surrounding it.  Earlier in the year, APR had hinted to us that their 1.8 TSI files would be quite impressive, and based on what they were able to do with the 2.0 TSI found in the new GTI and our time in their Golf R, we knew it’d be worth the wait.  So with this in mind, we lined our G...

Project Golf SportWagen- Intro

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers.  The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance. The current crop isn’t terribly good at handling or being efficient, which in my opinion are major components of our ideal driving experience.  So when it comes to space or utility, I usually look for something of the wagon variety- and it seems that I’m not alone. We hit quite a few shows around the east coast each summer, and we see modified Jetta SportWagens at nearly every event. Even amongst common consumers, these cars are highly sought-after. They don’t depreciate much, making even early Mk 5 2.5 versions expensive in comparison to other Jettas or Golfs of the same vintage. This year, Volkswagen launched their latest SportWagen, which is now billed as a Golf.  In many ways, this latest SportWagen is the best yet and it has certai...
