Ratty Rescue: The GLI That Nearly Became a GTI

So you say you want a newer car, but you can’t swing the monthly payments. We’ve all been there; you want the maximum performance for the lowest price. Maybe you even saw our recent Find Of The Day and want a similar ride. Might we suggest perusing your local auto auction for a lightly damaged but completely repairable ride? Today’s Ratty Rescue is just such a car. We all know that the MK6 GLI’s days are numbered. With the new MK7 Jettas now at dealerships, there’s a lull before we see the all-new model. For 2017 Volkswagen spruced up the sporty version of their most popular sedan with a new front fascia, interior trim, and rear bumper. It’s a sharp look for the aging sedan. Under the hood is Volkswagen’s award-winning 2.0T engine making over 200HP straight from the factory. GLIs have always been a great package. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] This 2017 Jetta GLI will need some work. The most obvious issue is the rear of the car. There’s damage to the rear bumper, the t...

RS Q8 Spied Rocking Roll Cage at the Ring

It’s not unusual to see Audi testing its cars at the Nurburgring. Even cars that aren’t particularly hot get tested there. But sometimes, we spot something that’s clearly meant to take the ‘Ring on, like this camouflaged Q8 with a roll cage in it. Like Nurburgring testing, fast SUVs are hardly a surprise anymore. Even Jeep makes a 700 hp Cherokee. But to see one with a roll cage in it is still unusual. The most recent version we can remember is the Bentley Bentayga that recently set the SUV record at Pikes Peak. Based on the same platform, they could conceivably share roll cages, as they appear to be sharing big, honking brakes. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] In the case of the Bentayga, they were the optional brakes that are shared with the Lamborghini Urus. Famously, the biggest discs ever fitted to a production vehicle, the should help this Q8 stop as well as she goes. Other changes to this Q8 include the ride height—low and mean—and the side skirts that, while obscu...

Volkswagen Group Records Best Ever First-Half-of-Year Sales

With 5.5 million vehicles in customer hands after the first six months of 2018, the Volkswagen Group is seeing the best performance of its history. Group deliveries increased significantly in all core regions,” said Fred Kappler, head of sales for the Group. “Our core brands recorded strong growth in the first half year.” For the year-to-date, all of Volkswagen’s brands had sales bumps. MAN, SEAT, and Skoda led the sales charge with performances 24%, 17% and 11% better than the previous year. The big sellers, too, had strong sales periods, with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, and Volkswagen sales rising 3.5%, 4.5% and 6.3% respectively. That last figure is particularly good new for the board, since Volkswagen alone sold more than 3 million vehicles in the first half of 2018. As Kappler stated, the numbers are equally good when you break sales down by region. Brazil and Russia were the most improved markets (22% and 20%, respectively), while strong sales in Europe and China (u...

Report: Aventador Replacement to Be Electrified, All Lambos to Follow

Lamborghini is in a difficult position, market-wise. As the standard bearer for big, old school, naturally aspirated engines it occupies a special place in the automotive landscape. But it also runs the risk of being left behind. Now, it seems that the brand with the bull has made a decision about its future. The next decade will see not only the Aventador gain electric power, but the rest of the range, too, according to a report from Auto Express . “The next Aventador will be hybrid, with a V12,” Stefano Domenicali, Lamborghini CEO, told Auto Express at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. “A decision is made on that and this is something that will keep us different from the others and this is very important.” But the electrification won’t stop there. “The next step is that not only the Urus but Aventador and Huracan will be hybrid, that’s for sure. Then we need to see how the solution will evolve,” said Domenicali. “With regard to the super sport car brand, it’s clear that we want to...

Watch: Mk 7 Golf R with 600 hp RS3 Five-Pot Runs Half Mile

The Mk 7 Golf R and its 306 hp 2.0L four aren’t exactly sluggish. But they sure aren’t the Audi RS3 and that car’s oh so wonderfully full of character inline five. So why not drop that 2.0L four in favor of the RS3’s 2.5L, 395 hp five. And while you’re at it, throw that five some more boost. Audis love boost! This one’s been tinkered with until the poster says it makes 600 hp. That makes it more powerful than most supercars, and thanks to the all-wheel drive it’s quicker too. Watch this Golf scream through the half-mile in 18 seconds at 157 mph. Even better, it looks completely stock. Except for those wheels. Let’s call them bold and leave it at that.
