VW: The Couple that Races Together Stays Together

Last week, VW took to the annual celebration of all things GTI to announce the arrival of a new model based on its Touring Car Racer. The Golf GTI TCR Concept featured a limited slip differential, a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, and special air inlets to get more air into the 2.0-liter engine that’s good for 286 hp, 273 lb-ft of torque, and an optional top speed of 164 mph. Exciting though that is, the Golf GTI TCR race car that inspired it is, as you’d expect, even more exciting. Since the hardcore racecar is lighter, faster, churns out 350 hp, and is eligible for racing series around the world, you might expect the car to be completely out of reach. But that’s not the case. If you have a few thousand dollars to spare (okay, more than just a few), you can buy one of your own. So VW made an ad for the car. Sure, there are a few “luxuries” missing, but those omissions are actually advantages depending on who you ask and we can’t help but envy this couple and their ability to se...

Civic Type R Sets Record at Magny-Cours, Can the GTI Respond?

Back in 2016 Benny Luchter briefly held the Nurburgring front-wheel-drive lap record before breaking it again in 2017 in the Golf GTI Clubsport S. Specifically designed to drive the ‘Ring, the Clubsport S came sans back seat, with 305 hp, and with a Nurburgring Mode in the drive select settings. Its 7:47.19 lap time, though, was broken again when Honda released the Civic Type R. Now the Civic has set another lap time at an old-timey European Grand Prix track that has fallen into disuse: France’s Circuit Nevers Magny-Cours. Touring Car driver Esteban Guerrieri set the 2:01.51 lap time, which, for context, is only about 10 seconds off a World Touring Car Championship Pole time in 2005 and roughly the same as a 911 Carrera S. The record is part of a series of records that Honda plans on setting as part of the Honda Civic Type R Challenge 2018 (they’re better at making cars than they are at naming stuff). The HCTRC 2018 will hit some of Europe’s best-known tracks, like Silverstone,...

Possible VW T-Roc GTI or T-Roc R spied

Filed under: Spy Photos , Volkswagen , Crossover , Hatchback , SUV , Performance Last summer, Volkswagen introduced a new subcompact crossover SUV called the T-Roc. It featured funky, chunky styling (at least as far as VWs are concerned) along with the segment's popular contrasting roof color options. VW has also made it apparent that it plans to expand the line with a convertible, and based on these spy shots, it may add a performance model. Perhaps a VW T-Roc GTI, or a T-Roc R. As Deaths Climb, Safety Advocates Want Renewed Action on Push-button Ignition Danger

It’s a minor annoyance when you’re taking exterior photos of a car in a public place. You leap out to take that perfect shot, leaving the engine running, and no sooner have you walked a couple of paces when the vehicle emits a loud, obnoxious beep. Or perhaps a few. Everyone looks in your direction. That’s a safety feature, as the car’s key fob rests safely in your pocket at that particular moment. The car isn’t sure what you’re up to — it just knows you left the vehicle running, and that could be a bad thing. While it’s an annoyance for a photographer, it’s there to prevent unpleasant incidents, including death by carbon monoxide exposure. With push-button ignitions now present in half of new vehicles, safety groups continue pressing for an industry-wide solution to a problem we’ve known about for years: drivers inadvertently leaving their vehicles running in the garage. The most recent look at the issue comes from The New York Times , which details the 28 deaths and 45 injurie...

Alleged Production Volkswagen T-Cross Leaks

Although the T-Cross is still a ways away from being ready for the public, an image purporting to be official has leaked online of the undisguised, production-ready T-Cross. Based on the MQB A0 platform (the same platform as the Polo) the T-Cross is the latest in a recent rash of SUVs that Volkswagen (and literally every other automaker) has promised. Although the diminutive SUV is unlikely ever to find its way to this side of the Atlantic, there’s still good reason to pay attention. With a smaller SUV based on the Tiguan confirmed for America and with the recent proliferation of small SUVs in America (Ford Ecosport, Honda CH-R, etc) the T-Cross’s design is a preview of things to come. With a grille not unlike the new Jetta’s and big foglights, the production T-Cross (if indeed this is it) does share quite a lot in common with the concept car that has been previewing it. Ratty Rescue: $2,500 Calabasas GTI

Honestly, it would be unnecessary and unkind to call this 1985 1.8-liter GTI ratty, but there are a couple of things that qualify the car for this series. Despite looking pretty good, the GTI is showing signs of its age. The paint is, apparently, a little tired and there are some signs of a repaint, the grille was glued in place (so think long and hard before you decide to replace it), and according to the seller, the brakes need some work—which is exactly the kind of problem that sounds simple, but can turn out to be a real headache. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] But really these are all trifling issues and if things fall your way, you could reasonably have this little GTI daily driving this summer. So, is it really ratty? Probably not. With a little more work you could have a pretty clean ride and, since it’s a California car, it’s a pretty good candidate for a project car if you’re willing to invest a little more work still. So, what qualifies this car as a ratty res...
