Lamborghini Says the Urus SUV Will Own the Nurburgring

Lamborghini says the soon-to-arrive Urus will be the fastest production SUV to ever lap the venerable German circuit. The fastest SUV to ever lap the 12.9-mile Nordschleife was the last-generation Porsche Cayenne Turbo S which hustled its way around the Eiffel circuit in 7:59.74. But Lamborghini research and development chief Maurizio Reggiani is positive the Urus will be faster. “Our SUV will achieve more than 300 kph (187 mph) because it’s a Lamborghini. It’s our DNA. (We will) achieve the best lap time for an SUV on Nordschleife—this is a faster SUV,” Reggiani told Motor Authority . But Lamborghini isn’t the only one looking to top the time sheet, Alfa Romeo claims the new Stelvio Quadrifoglio will kill the Cayenne and take the crown of fastest family hauler. Considering the Giulia QV is already the fastest four-door sedan to lap the ‘Ring, Alfa’s claims could carry some weight. We’ll likely have to wait a few more months before the Italians can throw handbags at one another as ...

Ratty Rescue: Pre-lowered GTI

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Our latest car-in-need-of-rescue is…another GTI. Can you blame us? One of Volkswagen’s most iconic models, the original hot hatch is becoming, well, hot in the collector car market. Now may be the best time to pick up one in need of attention before values rise. Why this 1985 GTI? To start, it boasts a solid and completely rust free body. Like any 30-year-old car, it has its share of dents and dings; the seller states there’s a dent on the right side of the car near the wheel well, but sadly does not include a photo. Most body trim pieces are present, and the grille, like most unloved VWs, is in the rear seat. Inside, the former Car of the Year appears to have a complete interior. You can see the seats are in typical shape for a car of this age. The center console is present: it’s in the passenger footwell. With crank windows, there are no touchy electrical switches to deal with. And is that a sunroof wind deflector on top of the dash? The...

Tiguan and Atlas in Contention for North American Utility Car of the Year

The North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards’ longlist has been announced and, much to its pleasure I’m sure, Volkswagen has two SUVs on the list. Both of the brand’s latest SUVs, the Tiguan and the Atlas, made it onto this year’s list of semifinalists. Volkswagen has taken on the SUV market with determination thanks to its seemingly unending growth and the brand’s tardiness in addressing the market. Along with the Tiguan and the Atlas, VW offers the Tiguan Limited, a compact SUV. Volkswagen isn’t planning on offering the T-Roc, a recently announced compact SUV that might handily fit into the compact SUV slot, but reports suggest that America will get its own compact SUV, specifically designed for the market. As 2018 has been ordained as the year of cars (by which I mean not SUVs), VW has decided to reveal at least two new/heavily updated sedans next year (probably the Arteon and the new Passat). That would leave such an SUV to be revealed in 2019. Other Volkswagen Group...

$31,425 2018 Volkswagen Atlas 2.0T’s Fuel Economy Basically Matches Smaller VW Tiguan

At launch, the lone Volkswagen Atlas available in the United States was the more powerful 3.6-liter V6, a Tennessee-built $34,425 three-row crossover with 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is an $1,800 option. The Atlas was rated at 18 miles per gallon in the city; 25 on the highway. City fuel economy for AWD models dropped by a single mpg; highway mpg fell to 23. Now we know how much money you can save by purchasing the front-wheel-drive-only Volkswagen Atlas 2.0T, which suffers a loss of 41 horsepower but generates very nearly as much torque as the V6 (258 lb-ft) and does so 1,150-rpm closer to idle. Not surprisingly, a small, modern, turbocharged engine is barely more efficient than the larger, naturally aspirated V6. According to the EPA, the front-wheel-drive Atlas 2.0T is rated at 22 miles per gallon in the city, a substantial improvement over the V6’s 18-mpg rating. But highway fuel economy ticks up by only one mpg to 26. By the EPA’s estimate, you’ll sa...

Atlas Becomes Tenth VW with 5 Star Safety Rating

The list of Volkswagens with a 5 Star safety rating has grown by one, as the National Highway Safety Administration has given the Atlas the rating. Not only has it gotten NHTSA’s highest star-based rating, but when equipped with Front Assist, it becomes an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. The Atlas joins the 2017 Beetle, 2018 Golf, Alltrack, GTI, R, SportWagen, Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Passat as 5-Star rated vehicles. The NHTSA tests crash cars from their side, front, and roof to determine the safety of a car. Points are also awarded by the IIHS for active safety features, like Front Assist, which warns you if you come up on a vehicle too quickly. For instance, if the car in front of you stops short, the driver is warned. Front Assist comes as standard on the Atlas SEL, SEL Premium trims and on the SE when it’s equipped with the Technology package. “The Volkswagen Atlas is designed for the modern American family,” said Hendrik Muth, Senior VP, Product Marketing ...

Bugatti Chiron Successor Already Being Discussed

The Bugatti Chiron will remain in production for a while longer, but the supercar manufacturer is already discussing its next project.   Speaking to Road & Track , Bugatti CEO Wolfgang Durheimer revealed the Chiron will stay in production for about six years, after which a successor will likely arrive. It takes quite a while to develop 1,000+ hypercars capable of topping 260 mph, so Bugatti is best off getting to work on the Chiron’s replacement sooner rather than later. “Chiron will be with us for quite some time,” Durheimer said. “It is supposed to sell for six years—right now we have a waiting list of four years. We have now sold car number 300 out of 500 and we are doing 70 a year. We are not increasing the volume. So the question, what is the next one, needs to be answered in 2019. Next year is a pre-development year where we evaluate the different ideas.” It’s not clear what may power the Chiron successor or if it will be a hybrid, but Durheimer made it clear it w...
