Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles on Track with Network Rail Fleet Deal

  • Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to supply more than 300 vehicles to Network Rail

  • Deal includes 124 Amaroks and 188 Transporters

  • Transporter panel van and Transporter Kombi included within new deal

  • Amarok’s 4×4 capabilities key to carrying out network servicing

Train commuters across the country can take comfort that Britain’s great railway network will be serviced by the best vehicles in the business, thanks to a new fleet deal which will see Volkswagen supply commercial vehicles to Network Rail.

Every year 1.3 billion journeys are made on Britain’s railways and 100 million tonnes of freight is transported by rail between ports, factories and shops. Maintaining and developing Britain’s rail tracks, signalling, bridges, tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and stations is no easy task.

When looking for a versatile and extensive fleet of vans that could operate in the toughest environment, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles was the obvious choice.

The current agreement is for 312 vehicles – 124 Amarok 140PS BMT, 168 Transporter 114PS BMT and 20 Transporter Kombi 114PS BMT. The fleet will be used by Network Rail’s engineering team.

Each vehicle supplied has been carefully selected for the business area it will operate in, with many featuring specifications to make life on board more efficient for drivers.

Steve Duffy, business support manager for Network Rail, commented: ‘With over 20,000 miles of track and thousands of rail assets to maintain, the team requires the best products and support to deliver very complex jobs.

‘The combination of Volkswagen’s broad model range and its dedicated national fleet support team has helped us to deliver a fleet solution that meets the needs of our business, now and into the future.’

Chris Black, Head of Fleet for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Network Rail. The versatility of our products and the power of our residual values mean we are highly competitive and able to offer outstanding value for money. Our dedicated fleet support team means we can also supply fleet customers with excellent options and a bespoke service.’

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
