Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau

Max Verstappen battles back brilliantly in Macau

The fastest lap and the fightback of the race – Max Verstappen made a great impression on his debut at the Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau, but missed out on the podium. The future Formula 1 driver started from the back of the grid and worked his way up from 24th into seventh place on the narrow street circuit. This made the Dutchman the top driver “powered by Volkswagen”. Tom Blomqvist (GB) missed out on a potential win at the 61st edition of the classic race. The son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist started the race from third on the grid after his result in the qualifying race and even led briefly after the start before a collision on the first lap brought his race to an end. Felix Rosenqvist (S) won the main race after the race was stopped and then restarted behind the safety car. With eight victories, Volkswagen remains the most successful engine manufacturer in the history of the race in Macau.

Ogier wins in Wales to make it an even dozen for Volkswagen

Volkswagen set a new record number of wins in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at the final round in Great Britain. The eighth win of the season for world champions* Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) is the twelfth victory in 13 rallies. Ogier/Ingrassia built up a lead of over a minute on the first of three rally days in Wales, which they managed cleverly on Saturday and Sunday. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) finished the Rally Great Britain in eighth after a slip-up on Saturday morning set them back more than three minutes. The Finnish duo won the Power Stage to secure three bonus points. The extremely difficult conditions took their toll on Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N). They came off the road on Friday and Sunday, and finished both days early. Their comeback on Saturday was impressive, however – with five stage wins and four second-fastest times on nine stages.

Volkswagen celebrates WRC titles in Wolfsburg

Volkswagen is set to celebrate its World Championship titles in the FIA WRC next weekend (Saturday, 22 November) with a driving event in Wolfsburg. Pestalozziallee, a street in the city centre, will be transformed into a rally mile, on which Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen will show off their skills in the Polo R WRC. The spectators will also have the opportunity to see the drivers and co-drivers being interviewed, collect autographs and put their own rally skills to the test in a 4D driving simulator.

* Subject to the official publication of the results by the FIA.

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

When we last left you, the humble little SportWagen was fresh from the development process with our friends at AWE Tuning, sporting a new downpipe, exhaust and intake, allowing things to breathe a bit easier.  The car sounded great, but there was no getting around the fact that our wagon was still quite, well, slow.   While we realize that nothing we do to the Golf SportWagen at this point will make it a race car, we still felt compelled to do something .  To put it bluntly, we had a fever, and the only cure was more power. Flash forward a few hours, and we found ourselves at Waterfest, staring down APR’s palatial spread and the numerous tuned vehicles surrounding it.  Earlier in the year, APR had hinted to us that their 1.8 TSI files would be quite impressive, and based on what they were able to do with the 2.0 TSI found in the new GTI and our time in their Golf R, we knew it’d be worth the wait.  So with this in mind, we lined our G...

Volkswagen’s Gone to California with Grand California Camper

Volkswagen is bringing the California XXL concept to production. It will debut at the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon as the Grand California. It’s set to be based on the medium wheelbase Crafter van. That’s the company’s full-size commercial van, larger than the T6 Transporter based California. The high roof means room for adults to stand up, though it won’t get the concept’s extended length. The Grand California offers a full wet bathroom. It’s not exactly spacious, though, measuring in at around 31.5 x 33-inches. A toilet, shower, and sink are all crammed into that space, but at least there are motion sensor lights to stop you from reaching for a switch. Standard, the Grand California it comes with berths for two adults. Space for two children is optional, but they’ll be stuck in a berth amove the driver’s area. The kitchen offers a sink, stove, and two fridges. The front seats swivel to add seating space when the RV is parked. It’s also got solar panels, an integrated satellite dish,...
