Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Max Verstappen battles back brilliantly in Macau

The fastest lap and the fightback of the race – Max Verstappen made a great impression on his debut at the Formula 3 Grand Prix in Macau, but missed out on the podium. The future Formula 1 driver started from the back of the grid and worked his way up from 24th into seventh place on the narrow street circuit. This made the Dutchman the top driver “powered by Volkswagen”. Tom Blomqvist (GB) missed out on a potential win at the 61st edition of the classic race. The son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist started the race from third on the grid after his result in the qualifying race and even led briefly after the start before a collision on the first lap brought his race to an end. Felix Rosenqvist (S) won the main race after the race was stopped and then restarted behind the safety car. With eight victories, Volkswagen remains the most successful engine manufacturer in the history of the race in Macau.

Ogier wins in Wales to make it an even dozen for Volkswagen

Volkswagen set a new record number of wins in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) at the final round in Great Britain. The eighth win of the season for world champions* SĂ©bastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) is the twelfth victory in 13 rallies. Ogier/Ingrassia built up a lead of over a minute on the first of three rally days in Wales, which they managed cleverly on Saturday and Sunday. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) finished the Rally Great Britain in eighth after a slip-up on Saturday morning set them back more than three minutes. The Finnish duo won the Power Stage to secure three bonus points. The extremely difficult conditions took their toll on Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N). They came off the road on Friday and Sunday, and finished both days early. Their comeback on Saturday was impressive, however – with five stage wins and four second-fastest times on nine stages.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything. There’s room for one car there and you’re blind.” Fourteen more cars would eventually crash into the corner c

The First of its Kind: Integrated Engineering Releases Highly-Anticipated IE450T MK6 Golf R Turbo Kit

After two long years of development, the team at Integrated Engineering has finally announced the release of their IE450T kit for the MK6 Golf R. With their turbo kit bolted on right out of the box, the sport AWD hatch is transformed into a 450bhp monster, with hardly any noticeable increase in spool time. In fact, 435 ft-lbs of torque are achieved at all four wheels, at a mere 3300rpm! By now you are probably asking yourself how this is even possible on a 2.0L engine that made nearly half that power from the factory. By employing true twin-scroll technology into the cast turbo manifold and pairing it with a state-of-the-art BorgWarner EFR turbocharger, IE was able to keep spool time at a minimum and bring the fastest-spooling big turbo setup to the market. “We wanted to offer a kit that would dramatically increase the power output without making the car lose its amazing street-friendly drivability,” mentioned one of the IE engineers. We are told the IE450T leaves the car driving jus
