The Jetta is one of the world’s most successful sedans with over 14 million units sold since 1979. Last year alone, Volkswagen delivered 925,000 units – this makes the Jetta one of the top selling cars of the brand and of the entire Group. The sedan has also been the number 1 selling Volkswagen in America for decades. Now launching – initially in the USA – is a version of the Jetta that has been extensively redesigned and re-engineered; it will also be modified for Europe and arrive in Germany this autumn. Designers created new front and rear designs (optional new xenon headlights and LED tail lights), and engineers developed a new sporty and fuel-efficient TDI Clean Diesel (110 kW / 150 PS; 37 mpg combined). Aerodynamic experts reduced air drag by 10 percent, and new tires improved rolling resistance. Electronic experts came up with new assistance systems (Blind Spot Detection, Front Assist and Rear Traffic Alert), and the body team achieved even better crash properties (now 5 stars in US-NCAP testing; top results are also expected in the IIHS Small Overlap test). Last but not least, interior designers have ensured that the successful model will make an even more sophisticated and comfortable appearance (new instruments, new steering wheel, upholstery materials and accents). That is how we have made the best Jetta ever. The car will arrive at American Volkswagen dealers in September. In the powertrain area, three gasoline engines (85 kW / 115 PS, 125 kW / 170 PS and a GLI with 155 kW / 210 PS) and a full hybrid version (system power: 125 kW / 170 PS) will be offered along with the new generation TDI Clean Diesel with internal designation EA 288. These versions were also made more fuel-efficient based on improved aerodynamics and reduced rolling resistance. The engines being used in Europe and in other non-American markets are EA 211 generation direct-injection TSI engines with 1.2 and 1.4 litres displacement (77 kW / 105 PS, 92 kW / 125 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS) and a new 2.0 TDI (81 kW /110 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS).


The Jetta in Germany. Instead of the previous three different equipment lines, in Germany the Jetta will launch with a more exclusive range of features as in models like the Volkswagen CC or Touareg. Until now, the Jetta was offered in Germany in the “Trendline”, “Comfortline” and “Highline” versions. They are now being replaced by a new equipment line (“Jetta”). It is based on the middle equipment line, the “Comfortline” (whose features include 16-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed steering wheel, RCD radio-CD system and center armrests at the front and rear), which was additionally upgraded with the Driver Alert System, multifunction display “Plus” and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. In Germany, the sedan can be further customized with optional features and eight new option packages. They include three exterior packages (Design package “Lancaster” with 17-inch wheels, the sport package “Queensland” with 17-inch wheels and the sport package “Charleston” with 18-inch wheels) as well as five interior or feature packages (Technology Package, Climate Package, Ambiance Package, Mirror Package and Parking Convenience package”). Now as before, an independent top version is also being offered: the Jetta Hybrid (standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with cornering lights and LED daytime running lights and a multifunction steering wheel with gear shifting function). Volkswagen will be announcing more details on the Jetta offered in Germany in advance of its market introduction this autumn.


New design and perfected aerodynamics


Sharper front end. Volkswagen has restyled the front and rear of the Jetta while improving its aerodynamic properties for 10 percent less air drag. At the front, the latest generation of the sporty sedan can be immediately recognized by its redesigned radiator grille with three cross fins, optional bi-xenon headlights with cornering, turn signal and LED daytime driving lights as well as a new bumper. The bi-xenon headlights have an especially distinctive design. The daytime running light is formed by 15 LEDs arranged in an L-shaped string alongside and beneath the xenon module, and they generate an unmistakable light signature, day and night. A chrome element between the LED daytime running lights and the xenon module accentuates the headlights. The new visual band formed by the radiator grille and the headlights, as well as the now larger lower air inlet, give the Jetta a more impressive, wider and exclusive appearance. The re-sculpted fog lights mounted in the outer areas of the bumper reinforce this effect. The Jetta GLI and Jetta Hybrid feature independent design elements. The GLI, for example, has a red stripe that is typical for this model in the bi-xenon headlights (optional); the Hybrid can be recognized in part by its partially closed-off radiator grille.


Sporty rear section. As at the front, designers also redesigned the rear body. Here it is the trunk lid, tail lights, logos and the bumper that identify this as a new generation Jetta. Typical of contemporary Volkswagen design DNA is the uncompromising horizontal orientation of the rear lines. The trunk lid has an aerodynamic trailing edge, and on the sides the lines of this integrated spoiler extend into the rear fenders and then into the precise contour of the car’s silhouette near the so-called character line. Beneath this are the new tail lights (LED optional), which feature a bright stripe, as well as the also redesigned VW logo. One level lower, the side lines of the trunk lid (with optimized load width) now run downward, which dominates the design. Beneath this, the new and very precisely designed bumper completes the impressive look of the rear of the Jetta. Here too, the Jetta Hybrid exhibits independent design and aerodynamic elements such as a special rear diffuser.


Optimal aerodynamics. As mentioned, Volkswagen has introduced numerous innovative aerodynamic modifications into the design and equipment of the Jetta which is now 4,659 mm long, 1,774 mm wide (without door mirrors) and 1,453 mm tall, and thereby reduced the sedan’s air drag by 10 percent. Some of these modifications can be recognized at first glance, while others are hidden. Consider the front end: Air drag was reduced by the new bumper, perfected air inlets and aerodynamically optimized rain gutters on the sides near the A-pillars. Only a closer look reveals such modifications as underbody panels at the rear axle and sill covers with wheel spoilers. The Jetta 1.8 TSI with 125 kW / 170 PS also has modified brake ventilation channels. The Jetta GLI and Jetta Hybrid also sport special aerodynamic elements. Both models are equipped with a new rear spoiler, each of which was individually developed for the GLI and the Hybrid, as well as a front spoiler and sill extensions. The new GLI will launch with a standard exclusive “GLI Edition 30″ front end.


Dynamic radiator shutter. One cutting-edge aerodynamic feature is the automatically opening and closing shutter for the radiator grille. This newly developed aerodynamic feature is found in the Jetta 1.8 TSI with 125 kW / 170 PS and the Jetta 2.0 TDI Clean Diesel with 110 kW / 150 PS. When the shutter is closed, the frontal airflow is guided around the smooth exterior body skin, which significantly improves the car’s aerodynamics. Closing the radiator shutter also shortens the warm-up phase of the engine due to reduced air cooling. This also has a beneficial effect on fuel economy. If the engine coolant temperature drops below a predefined temperature threshold while driving, the radiator shutter is closed. When the engine is not in the warm-up phase, the engine controller chooses – in need-based control based on vehicle speed and cooling demands of the individual subfunctions (e.g. engine, air conditioning, forced induction air) – the desired state of the radiator shutter with the goal of optimally reducing CO2 emissions.


Interior upgraded


New instruments in tube look. One of the many strengths of the Jetta is its interior, which bridges over to the next higher class with its ample space, sophisticated look and extremely good ergonomics with intuitive controls. That is precisely what has further perfected the new Jetta. The update of the Jetta is characterized by new instruments in a sporty tube look, an optional color multifunction display in the instruments, a new generation steering wheel (optional multifunction steering wheel), new accents for the center console, elegant high-gloss black trim around the gear shift lever, new chrome accents around the Climatronic controls, redesigned controls for the air nozzles, ambient lighting (lighting of inside door handle and foot space) as well as new fabric colors and designs for the seats and door trim.


Regardless of whether the US-Jetta is being driven in the base version or as an S, SE, SEL, GLI or Hybrid SEL – in every version the interior offers maximum detailed perfection and intuitive operation. The instrument layout is intuitive. The right hand ergonomically rests on the gear shift knob, and just above it are the center console controls for the climate control system and the radio or radio-navigation system; the console is slightly angled towards the driver here for a cockpit layout that ideally meets the driver’s needs. Even in the base version, the rear bench seat has a 40/60 split; this increases versatility. The trunk can also be opened by remote unlocking from inside the car. Up to six airbags are included as standard equipment in the base model (two newly designed head-thorax airbags near the upper side window offers even greater protection against being ejected from the car in a rollover accident, two front airbags and two side airbags in front).


New assistance systems for greater safety


Democratizing progress. Volkswagen is one of the world’s most innovative automobile manufacturers. The Group is a leader when it comes to integrating premium class technologies in more affordable vehicles. The Jetta that is now launching illustrates this approach with an entire armada of new assistance systems. For the first time, Volkswagen is offering the sporty sedan with the systems Blind Spot Detection plus Rear Traffic Alert, Front Assist with collision warning as well as bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering, turn signal and LED daytime driving lights. Each of these technologies improves occupant safety significantly.


Blind Spot Detection. This system can contribute towards preventing serious accidents. How it works: Blind Sport Detection utilizes a flashing symbol in the outer area of the door mirrors to make the driver aware of vehicles in the blind spot next to the Jetta or approaching from the rear. This is intended to reduce risk in hazardous lane-changing situations. The system uses radar sensors to “monitor” a space around the vehicle with a range of 20 meters. Customers who choose the Blind Spot Detection option automatically get the Rear Traffic Alert assistance system too.


Rear Traffic Alert. The new Rear Traffic Alert assistance system offers further safety gains; it is offered in tandem with Blind Spot Detection. Rear Traffic Alert finally makes backing out of alleys and parking spaces that are perpendicular to the street safer. The innovative aspect: The system not only “detects” stationary and moving vehicles directly behind the Jetta; it also detects vehicles approaching from the side which are very difficult for the driver to see. The radar-based sensor module can even detect objects up to 40 meters away. In case of an impending collision, the system gives an acoustic warning. If the driver or other traffic participants do not make any corrections or there is a risk of a direct collision, Rear Traffic Alert automatically initiates a braking intervention.


Front Assist / Forward Collision Warning. Front Assist helps to avoid front-end collisions by being an attentive “passenger”. The system uses radar sensors to continually monitor the distance to traffic ahead of the vehicle. Within physical system limits, Front Assist warns the driver of critical front-end collision situations, both acoustically and visually by a clear warning symbol in the instrument cluster. The radar sensor acquires both the position of stationary cars and motorcycles and those moving in the same direction as the vehicle. The sensor is hidden behind the VW logo on the radiator grille. Front Assist can be deactivated. However, for safety reasons the system is automatically reactivated whenever the engine is started.


Bi-xenon headlights. Seeing and being seen. That is precisely what the bi-xenon headlights improve; they are available as an option from the Jetta S, and they are even standard equipment in the top model. Also integrated in the new generation of headlights is what is referred to as the “Advanced Frontlighting System” (AFS); here, the headlights track the steering angle and become dynamic cornering lights. At speeds below 25 mph (40 km/h), the static cornering lights that are activated by the turn signal improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Another standard feature: daytime running lights which are generated by 15 LEDs on each headlight side.


New TDI Clean Diesel in detail


32 mpg / 46 mpg / 37 mpg. As noted, a newly developed high-tech engine in the Jetta is the 110 kW / 150 PS TDI Clean Diesel; it is one of the most fuel-efficient and low-emitting engines in its class and already conforms to the upcoming LEV3 emissions standard in the USA. Compared to the previous engine, which had 10 PS less in power, the already low fuel consumption of the TDI was reduced by another six percent (estimated values). The Jetta TDI Clean Diesel with a manual transmission will have an estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg City and 46 mpg Highway; its combined fuel economy is 37 mpg. Data for the version with a sporty 6-speed automatic DSG (dual-clutch transmission): 31 mpg (City), 44 mpg (Highway) and 36 mpg (Combined). In the European models, the 2.0 TDI with 81 kW / 110 PS has fuel consumption figures of 4.0 l/100 km and 4.2 l/100 km (DSG); figures for the 2.0 TDI with 110 kW / 150 PS are 4.2 l/100 km and 4.5 l/100 km (DSG).


Quiet and torque-strong. The common rail direct injection engine is an exceptionally comfortable and dynamic engine. Its acoustic properties lie on the same level as that of a very good gasoline engine. The 1,968 cm3 TDI Clean Diesel of the Jetta develops its maximum power over a low speed range of 3,500 to 4,000 rpm. The maximum torque of the four-cylinder engine of 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) is even available at a low 1,750 rpm (up to 3,000 rpm). This gives the Jetta an optimal range of torque for all vehicle speeds permitted in the USA. This intelligent dynamics – which has been modified from the high driving speed country of Germany – continues to be very appealing in the USA. Over the past five years, the Volkswagen Group has progressively increased the diesel market share of its Clean Diesel models to 79 percent. In 2013 alone, 111,825 diesel powered passenger cars of the three brands Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche were sold. So four out of five new diesel cars registered in the USA come from the Volkswagen Group.


First new generation TDI in the USA. The TDI of the Jetta is the first engine to be introduced to the USA which utilizes the new modular diesel system (MDB) from Volkswagen. Many components of the MDB engines are used in a modular way. They include exhaust system components and the injection system, forced induction systems and forced induction cooling within the induction manifold module. Besides reducing hazardous emissions, Volkswagen also tuned all components of the new TDI for minimal internal friction. These actions included using piston rings with lower pretension and very low-friction bearings for the camshaft (drive side). Energy efficiency was also optimized by using an oil pump with volumetric control and two pressure levels. An innovative thermal management system makes use of separate coolant loops for the cylinder head and the crankcase during the warm-up phase and has a water pump that can be deactivated. Another new feature is the radiator shutter of the Jetta that can be controlled according to cooling needs.


First Jetta to have SCR catalytic converter. A complex exhaust gas recirculation system is also used. To conform to the current BIN5-ULEV2 emissions standard in the USA, as well as the future LEV3/TIER3 standard, the Jetta is equipped with an emissions control system, including SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that is located near the engine. This layout enables extremely fast response by the oxidation catalytic converter and the SCR catalytic converter. The SCR catalytic converter significantly reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) using the additive AdBlue. Compared to the NOx storage catalytic converter (NSC) of the previous model, the use of the SCR catalytic converter not only further reduces emissions, but also improves fuel economy. That is because: SCR technology is able to optimally reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) over the entire operating range of the Jetta TDI Clean Diesel. This also makes the new Jetta, and especially a Jetta with a diesel engine, one of the most sustainable and economical models on the market. Thanks to its high torque at low engine speeds, the Jetta TDI Clean Diesel is also exceptionally fun to drive.

Macau Gets Messy with 16-Car Pileup

The Macau Grand Prix is always good for an accident or two or 16— you may remember Audi’s race ending crash last year —and this year’s event didn’t disappoint. It didn’t take long for things to get messy on the tight road circuit. On the opening lap of the qualifying race a 16-car pileup caused the race to be suspended. Things kicked off when Daniel Juncadella hit a wall on the exit of Police bend, one of the tightest parts of the already tight circuit. The following car of Raffaele Marciello was able to avoid the carnage, but Laurens Vanthoor, who was in the upside-down Audi that ended the race last year, could not avoid Juncadella and together they blocked up the road pretty much completely. “I couldn’t see him [Juncadella] at first. Then I saw the car standing still,” Vanthoor told Motorsport. “I tried to brake but it was just understeering and I couldn’t do anything. The First of its Kind: Integrated Engineering Releases Highly-Anticipated IE450T MK6 Golf R Turbo Kit

After two long years of development, the team at Integrated Engineering has finally announced the release of their IE450T kit for the MK6 Golf R. With their turbo kit bolted on right out of the box, the sport AWD hatch is transformed into a 450bhp monster, with hardly any noticeable increase in spool time. In fact, 435 ft-lbs of torque are achieved at all four wheels, at a mere 3300rpm! By now you are probably asking yourself how this is even possible on a 2.0L engine that made nearly half that power from the factory.
