With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Verstappen secures impressive start-finish victory


Max Verstappen (NL) has won the tradition-steeped Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort. The 16 year-old, who is currently speeding from one victory to the next in the Formula 3 European championship, secured a masterful victory where he led from start to finish on the twisting sand dune circuit on the Dutch North Sea coast in the Dallara F312 “powered by Volkswagen” of the Motopark team and wrote history in the process – twice. It was Volkswagen’s first ever victory in the Formula 3 Masters, also Verstappen’s father, ex Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, won the important international race for the best Formula 3 drivers on the same spot 21 years ago. Max Verstappen subsequently added his name to a list of former winners, which includes greats such as David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton and Nico HĂ¼lkenberg.

Heikkinen makes it into the semi-final in Höljes


Toomas Heikkinen (FIN) narrowly missed out on the final at the fifth event of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Höljes (S). The 23-year old took fourth place in the Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar in the semi-final; third position would have been enough for the Team Marklund Motorsport driver to qualify for the final race. Team-mate Anton Marklund likewise missed out on reaching the semi-final by a very narrow margin. One victory, two second-place finishes and a breakdown in the heats was not enough to qualify for the final as one of the fastest six drivers. Heikkinen is still in fourth place on 88 points in the world championship standings and Marklund in fifth on 64 points. Tanner Foust, who didn’t race in Höljes, is eighth overall (42 points). The next races in the World Rallycross Championship will be held on 12 and 13 June at the Circuit Jules Tacheny in Belgium.

Van Weely wins both races in East London


Nicholas van Weely won both races in the Formula Volkswagen South Africa in East London. The South African had to concede defeat to compatriot Robert Wolk in qualifying, but then hit back in impressive style during the two races. In the first race he crossed the finishing line with only a one-second lead over Matthew Swanepoel (ZA), Jason Campos (also ZA) was third. In the second race Van Weely won with a two-second advantage ahead of Werner Scholtz (ZA) and Matthew Merton (ZA) crossed the finish a further half a second back in third place. The next races in the Formula Volkswagen South Africa series will be staged on 2 August in Phakisa (ZA).


Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa

Brummer and Hodges victorious


Dewald Brummer and Matthew Hodges (both ZA) won the two races during the fourth race weekend of the Engen Volkswagen Cup South Africa in East London. Hodges, who started third on the grid, was victorious in the first race over six laps ahead of compatriots Daniel Rowe and Brummer. The latter secured victory in the second race over ten laps and assigned the 15-year old Sheldon van der Linde (ZA) and Hodges to places second and third respectively. The next races in the Engen Volkswagen Cup 2014 will be held at the Phakisa (ZA) race circuit on 2 August.

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers.  The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance.
