Bugatti is So Over Top Speed Tests, Isn’t Even Interested in How Fast Chiron Goes

What? Is 261 mph not fast enough for you? Do you really need Bugatti to go faster to prove you should buy a Chiron? Well, too bad, because top speed records are soooooo 2013 and Bugatti CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, is interested in new and better stuff that you probably wouldn’t even get. Speaking to Motor Trend , the CEO said that he doesn’t have time to prove exactly how fast the Chiron can go. “To me, a top speed run is not on the agenda,” Winkelmann told the publication. “For me, performance has a lot of facets, and the Chiron besides being a hypercar is a car covering a lot more than other supersports cars.” Instead, Winkelmann says that he’s more interested in just how quickly the Chiron can go around corners. Hence: Divo. “It is much more important than showing one little slice of what this car is able to do,” he said. “In this world, to talk only top speed is not a priority for me.” And the strategy may be working. Although the Chiron isn’t what you’d call cheap, the $5 m...

It Begins: VW Teases Mk8 Golf with an Early Sketch

Well, at least we know it won’t be a massive departure if this recently released sketch of the upcoming Mk8 Golf is anything to go by. With about year before the 2020 model is released in Europe (and longer still before it’s USDA Approved) prepare yourselves for many teasers to come. The latest sketch doesn’t lead us to expect a massive departure visually, but it does show some updated headlights. The new light signature should be drawn in DRLs when the model comes out and the whole thing looks like it will fit in neatly with VW’s current design language. Rumors imply that the MQB-based offering shouldn’t feel all that different to drive, either. It will be an improved MQB chassis, though, so the drive should at least be improved, if not reinvented. The big differences should come in the form of a 48-volt “mild-hybrid” system (that allows for slightly improved economy, a bit of a boost in power, and more accessories) and an exceedingly digital cockpit. Expect bigger screens and pote...

Volkswagen Rebuilds 350,000 Mile Beetle for Special Owner

Over the course of 11 months, employees at Volkswagen’s Puebla plant took time away from building brand new cars and faced the same frustrations as the rest of us. A team of 60 employees rebuilt Annie, a 51-year-old Beetle with more than 350,000 miles on the clock. As Volkswagen points out, that’s enough to go around the planet 14 times. And all of that driving was done under the ownership of one person. Kathleen Brooks of Riverside, California bought Annie in 1967. It was her first Beetle and it turns out she really liked because up until 11 months ago, it remained her daily driver. A three-time cancer survivor, Brooks now works with breast-cancer survivors, providing cosmetic care and comfort during treatment and recovery. She also has a wry sense of humor, comparing herself to the car she’s driven for the last half-century. 680 HP Volkswagen ID R to be Displayed at the Petersen Museum

The 680 hp Volkswagen ID R will be displayed at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles from December 9th, 2018 until February 1st, 2019. VW electrified race fans this year when its ID R broke the outright record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, ascending the 12.4-mile, 156-turn course in just 9 minutes and 5.672 seconds. The 680 hp racer was purpose-built for the event, but VW is now considering taking it to the Nurburgring and challenging for the EV record there as well. But before the ID R does any more record-setting, it will enjoy a well-deserved winter break in southern California. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to showcase the ID R Pikes Peak race car at a world-renowned museum like the Petersen,” said VW America’s vice president of marketing, Derrick Hatami. “We are excited for members of the public to have a chance to see the record-breaking electric vehicle while it is on display, especially as it leads into the Petersen’s future-of-mobility exhibit...

VW wants I.D. R racer to set the Nurburgring EV lap record — and maybe more

VW Files Trademark for ID Light as Automaker Prepares to go ID Crazy

Volkswagen has filed a trademark application for the term ‘ID. Light’, adding yet another wordmark to its growing portfolio of ‘ID’ names. ID. Light was filed under classifications pertaining to automobiles and lighting apparatuses. It was also filed under a classification reserved for various instruments such as flashlights and microphones. This term likely isn’t intended to be used as an actual vehicle name, then. If we had to guess, we’d say it’s for a special exterior or interior lighting element that will appear on an electric ID model. VW also filed to reserve the terms ‘Interactive Light’, ‘Active Light’ and ‘Intelligent Light’ at the exact same time. All of these were filed under the same product classifications, so they are probably for similar purposes. VW has made its interest in advanced lighting technology quite public. The 2018 VW Touareg has an available Matrix LED lighting system called IQ.Light. The IQ.Light system is paired with a camera, which scans the road ahead...
