Listen: The 2005 Audi R8 LMP1 Car at Daytona

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The Marshall Pruett Podcast is back with another aural wonder. This time, recorded from the cockpit of the Audi’s 2005 Le Mans contender, from the HSR 24-Hour vintage event at Daytona International Speedway. Although it wasn’t the fastest in qualifying at Le Mans back in 2005, R8s would come first, third, and fourth at the race. For the Daytona classic event, the car was driven by Andy Wallace, a Le Mans legend who raced the R8C in 1999, the predecessor to the R8s that would dominate endurance racing for a decade and a half. The R8 itself is powered by a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V8 revving making between 635 and 650 hp and revving all the way up to 7,800 rpm. That was good enough to give Wallace the pole at the Daytona event, though the car eventually retired from the race due to technical issues. Wallace’s time, though, was so good that the 12-year-old Audi was only one second off the time set by the 2017 Cadillac DPi-V.R. The post Listen: ...

The Grand Tour’s new Driver Auditions Still Aren’t Going Well

The Grand Tour is looking for a new resident racing driver after sacking ‘The American’ Mike Skinner following Season 1.  Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond gave Porsche factory driver and former F1 driver Mark Webber an audition earlier this week, but his bias for Porsche put him out of the equation. Then Hammond got the idea to try out a nameless ‘stunt driver’ in the role, but he promptly cocked it up. That didn’t ruin his chances, though, because the stunt driver has now returned for a second audition, but let’s just say it doesn’t go too well. After these mishaps, it’s safe to say The Grand Tour’s racing driver for Season 2 won’t be this anonymous stunt driver. The only question is, which fast, charismatic racing driver is available to fill the role? Fans of Top Gear would sure like Ben Collins, otherwise known as The Stig, to return – but the BBC likely won’t be letting that happen. Check out the clip embedded above. The second season of The Grand Tour ...

Bentley Creates the Ultimate Bentayga for Field Sports Enthusiasts

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Bentley‘s personal commissioning division, Mulliner, has revealed its latest project. Called the Bentley Bentayga Field Sports by Mulliner, the customized luxury SUV is a one-off that is “designed to take occupants to the finest sporting events in total luxury, with all the accessories required for the perfect rural adventure,” said the British automaker. For the project, Mulliner teamed up with shotgun manufacturer Purdey, which handcrafts each customer’s shotgun with a process that takes up to two years to complete. So it’s little surprise the Bentayga has a twin-compartment sliding stowage unit that contains a tray with tailored sections for cartridges, drinks, binoculars, and protective wear. The handcrafted kit also contains a humidor and can be locked for extra security. Nestled between the rear seats is a leather-trimmed stowage case that fits up to two guns. There’s also a Purdey bag containing a waistcoat, waterproof cape, gaiters,...

Auto Loan Delinquencies Continued to Climb in the Last Quarter

The 60-day auto delinquency rate continued to climb through the third quarter of 2017. Driven primarily by “relaxed” underwriting standards from years past and increasing subprime originations, TransUnion’s senior vice president and automotive business head, Brian Landau, said two-month payment lapses rose 7 basis points to 1.4 percent. At the same time, the average balance of outstanding auto loans increased by around 5.9 percent, resulting in the lowest year-over-year growth rate since the third quarter of 2012. The group’s Industry Insights Report cited this quarter’s serious auto loan delinquency rate as the highest observed since Q3 2009 — you know, when nobody had any money to pay their bills. New business was also down. Subprime, near-prime and prime loan originations were down almost 6 percent for the third quarter. However, TransUnion explained to Automotive News that the blow was offset slightly by a 3.2 percent increase in prime-plus and super-prime originat...

Volkswagen France Finds New Use for Lane Assist: Taking Down Baddies

Although I would never take it away from anyone, I’ve never been a huge fan of lane assist. Then again, I’d never considered its use as a tool in the anti-baddie arsenal. Volkswagen France recently ran this ad, showing all the clever ways an international super spy (or actor) could use the Golf’s many safety features to escape harm at the hands of non-descript evil henchmen. Although the ad is shot in French, the action is easy enough to follow even with the language barrier. As for the narrative, it’s about as clear as a cataract even without the language barrier. The actor seems unwilling to give the GTI over to the stuntman because he wants to drive, but then he starts killing people, which is part of the movie, I guess? And then it turns out that it was the actor’s GTI the whole time? I dunno. Anyway, action movies have always been more about the ride than the destination and the VW France has very cleverly found ways to include the GTI’s safety features into the ad, so it...
