Find of the Day: 1999 Volkswagen Polo Wagon

It’s not every day that a forum legend comes up for sale, but with this Polo Wagon, the so-called Greenland Polo, we have just that.  Originally purchased by Jamie Orr from Orchid Euro in 2010, the car had previously served on a US Air Force Base in Thule, Greenland, before being shipped to the states as part of a military surplus sale.  Since then, Jamie has put a great deal of effort into restoring, repairing and subtly modifying the car, all of which was documented in this thread . As the thread can say much more than a few paragraphs ever could, I’ll defer those interested to the 25 page long chronicle of the rebuilding process- it’s quite the read. The car is currently available for the price of $8,400, and located just outside of Philadelphia, PA.   vwvortex discussion forums To see what others are saying about this article or to tell us what you think, check out the comments here... Video: Volkswagen Passat Undergoes IIHS Small Overlap Test

It’s that time of year again, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ratings are revealed through countless press releases from manufacturers, ensuring consumers that their product is indeed safe.  But for most of us, the words “Top Safety Pick +” are simply words on a page, with no real meaning aside from that it sounds impressive.  Mercifully, the IIHS uploads their tests to one of the most entertaining YouTube channels going for anyone with a valid internet connection to see just what exactly a “good” rating looks like. If one crash test could be considered a crowd favorite, it’d without a doubt be the small overlap.  In the clip above, Volkswagen’s new Passat goes head to head with a wall (literally), absorbing as much of the impact as possible to ensure the test subject remains safe.  It’s not pretty to watch, but in real world conditions, it’s good enough to save a life.
