With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.
FIA World Rally Championship
World champion Ogier honoured for season’s strong achievement
World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier (F) was honoured by Swiss watch manufacturer TAG Heuer in recognition of his superior achievements in the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship. In Paris, Ogier was presented with a handmade TAG Heuer “Monaco V4”, which was first seen on actor Steve McQueen’s wrist in the classic film “Le Mans” in 1971. “The Monaco V4 is an extraordinary watch, which has been an outstanding success for TAG Heuer,” said Ogier. “I like its distinctive square casing, and this model’s relationship to motorsport is legendary.” TAG Heuer, which is based in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, is Volkswagen’s partner in the FIA World Rally Championship.
FIA World Rallycross Championship
Marklund Motorsport and the Polo RX finish the season second
Thrilling FIA World Rallycross Championship final in Argentina: After the final round of the season, Marklund Motorsport and their Volkswagen Polo RX Supercars with more than 500 bhp finished second in the teams’ standings. In the battle with Ford Olsbergs MSE and Team Peugeot Hansen the Swedish team only had to let Olsbergs MSE pass. After promising heats and a P2 finish in the second semifinal for Toomas „Topi“ Heikkinen (FIN) in the Polo RX, it all came down to the final race of the season which the Finn finished fifth. In the drivers’ championship, which the winner of the Argentinean round Petter Solberg (N) had already wrapped up before the final, Heikkinen secured second place with his result in San Luis, while his team-mate Anton Marklund (S) finished the season sixth overall. The next FIA World Rallycross Championship season gets underway on 24 April 2015 with the world championship race in Montalegre, Portugal.
Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia
Season’s participants honoured at large reception
Four weeks ago, Alexey Ignatov (RUS) secured the title in the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia at the Rally Tmutarakan, now Ignatov and his fellow competitors were honoured for their strong achievements at a reception in Moscow (RUS), hosted by Volkswagen Group Russia. “It was an exciting season and I’ll remember the final for a long time,” said Ignatov, who struggled with tyre damage to his 165 bhp Volkswagen Polo at the final race of the season, but was still able to bring home the title. Pierre Boutin, Head of Volkswagen Russia, went on to say: “We witnessed one of the strongest competitive fields in a long time. This season the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia showed just how exciting rallying is. We’re already looking forward to the next season.” This is expected to start in April 2015.
Slotcar
E-version of the Polo R WRC collecting victories and titles as well
Small cars, lots of fun: With a double victory Team Volkswagen Motorsport’s Stefan Waschow (D) has been crowned 2014 Rallye Racing Carrera Cup champion. In Hamburg (D), the student finished the supersprint race first and also claimed victory in the subsequent 24 hours race. “I almost enjoyed the 24 hours victory more than the championship title because it was a great team effort,” said Waschow who teamed up with team principal Daniel Bäumler, DTM engineer Jürgen Jungklaus and Frank Schüler (all D). The winning car for the team supported by Volkswagen: the slotcar version of the Volkswagen Polo R WRC, scaled 1:24. Team Audi – with Le Mans legend Frank Biela (D) on the remote control – and Bentley finished second and third respectively.
