Audi Launches its Own Subscription Service – But Only in Texas For Now

The subscription service is called Audi Select and will give customers access to a variety of Audi vehicles for a flat fee of $1,395 a month,  Automotive News  reports. They will be able to swap out vehicles a maximum of two times per month and will have access to the A4, A5 convertible, S5 coupe and Q5 or Q7 crossovers. They can also hold any vehicle for up to six months. Vehicle selection will be subject to availability at the five participating dealerships. While prices may seem steep for something that only provides access to a range of mid-tier Audi products, subscribing to the program will also give the customer 24 days of free Audi rentals through the automaker’s own Silvercar rental car company. This could be handy if you travel frequently, as Silvercar operates in almost every major US market including New York, LA and Miami. Audi Select follows in the footsteps of rivals at Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Cadillac, Porsche and others, which have also launched th...

The New Jetta Runs 210 MPH at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Earns Land Speed Record Along the Way

Volkswagen has set a record at the Bonneville Salt Flats this week, taking the 2019 Jetta to 210.16 mph miles per hour. Although the record attempt got off to a fitful start, the race team successfully set its record on the final day of competition. The record stood at 208.472 mph (in its class and displacement size), the Jetta qualified for a record at 209 and backed it up at the above-mentioned 210.16 mph. “Achieving this speed at Bonneville is a demonstration of the quality, durability, power, and efficiency of the Volkswagen TSI engine series and the stability and aerodynamic efficiency of the all-new 2019 Jetta,” said Hinrich Woebcken, President and CEO, VolkswagenGroup of America. “This record underlines the sporty credentials of our all-new Jetta and also gives a hint at the future of the GLI model, since this car uses a modified version of the GLI’s powerful EA888, 2.0-liter TSI engine.” This particular Jetta was built by THR Manufacturing, the Ventura, California team that ...

The 2019 Volkswagens are Here, We Chart the Changes

Here it is: your big list of Volkswagen changes for 2019. From Atlas to Tiguan, this is your 2019 Volkswagen update. Well, except for the Jetta, since the 2019 Jetta arrived a few months back. Farewell to the Beetle and hello to a little colo-R. We’ll start with the Atlas, which gets some small changes in trim levels and equipment. Front assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert are now standard across the line. Bringing more active safety to more people. Digital Cockpit is expanded too, now standard on SEL models. The base Atlas S adds a bunch of cool stuff including auto headlights, auto wipers, and heated mirrors. SE gets three-zone climate control and the tech pack SE can have a panoramic roof and 20-inch alloys. The Beetle is saying goodbye for 2019. The first time in more than seven decades there won’t be a new Beetle. So there is going to be a Final Edition SE and SEL trim choice that adds some special extra kit. Mostly 17-inch alloys, chrome accents, keyless acce...

Find Of The Day: One Super(charged) GTI

Isn’t it easy to get lost on bringatrailer.com ? You’re looking for an affordable fun car, and next thing you know you’re staring at a $220,000 1969 Ferrari . You quickly click right past more common cars. Cars like this 1984 Volkswagen GTI. At first glance, this little hot hatch looks like a stock MK1 GTI with some simple mods. The Ronal Turbo wheels, headlight trim piece, and duckbill front spoiler all look like period-correct add-ons. Even the tilt-up sunroof screams 80s auto goodness. Look closer. Look past the shiny black paint. Those are some meaty tires with aggressive tread on the alloys? Seems a little overkill on a stock looking Rabbit. [ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] Then you open the hood and realize this isn’t some ordinary GTI. Oh no, this is one seriously hot hatch. A 1.8L 16-valve motor replaces the original 1.8L 8-valve engine. And bolted to that high-revving powerplant is a Sprintex supercharger. The fun doesn’t end there; the car has upgraded cams, a modi...

VW Seeking Industry Alliance for Self-driving Cars, Legal Protection for When They Crash

Volkswagen Group is interested in teaming up with other automakers to establish a new industry standard for self-driving technology. While the move would likely help streamline development, VW’s primary concern seems to be legal protection in the event an autonomous vehicle makes a mistake. The idea of an automaker preparing itself to better cope with the legal ramifications of accidentally killing one of its customers isn’t particularly encouraging, but it’s at least understandable. Pushing for an industry standard for new tech is commonplace within the automotive sector. Last year, several manufacturers adopted Automotive Grade Linux in an attempt  to create a default, open-sourced platform for in-car infotainment . While similar in concept to the standardizing of autonomous technology, the obvious difference is that there usually aren’t lives riding on infotainment systems. There have, however, been several incidents where autonomous technology and advanced driving aid...

You Can Now Get a Porsche 911 R 3D Puzzle

The  Porsche  911 R is easily one of the most desirable modern-day 911s. For a while, the limited-run 911 variant was the only way to get yourself into a manual 911 with the 911 GT3’s delicious 4.0-liter flat-six. This, along with its very limited availability, ensured 911 R values immediately skyrocketed upward shortly after it went on sale – making it unlikely that you’ll ever find one for sale at a reasonable price. If you count yourself among those who love the 911 R but will never be able to afford one, we have good news. Porsche has teamed up with German toy manufacturer Ravensburger to put a 911 R 3D puzzle on sale. The 3D puzzle, which contains 108 pieces, is a highly accurate recreation of the 911 R. It’s the result of a meticulous design and development process by engineers at Ravensburger, who developed two prototypes for the puzzle before finalizing the design. “It was a challenge to recreate the iconic shape of the Porsche 911 R as accurately and in as mu...
