Watch: How Volkswagen Arranged Five Cylinders into a Vee

Volkswagen’s VR6 engine is a little strange, but it’s a great way to put six cylinders where only four should have gone. But what about the V5? How does an engine with an odd number of cylinders get mashed into a vee without tearing itself apart? Sorcery? No. Engineering. If you want to understand the engineering behind it and find out how VW put five cylinders side-by-side, then here’s your chance. Watch as Engineering Explained…explains the engineering behind it and shows you how the V5 works. Watch: 911’s Take to a Frozen Lake

The latest video from Porsche puts a classic together with a future classic, and then takes them out for a snow day. The 911 GT2 RS and its 700 hp twin-turbo flat six don’t seem like the best partner for winter driving. But Porsche takes ones to frozen Lake St. Moritz in Switzerland to show us differently. Meanwhile, an early 1970s Porsche 911 S/T rally car is waiting on the lake. What are they there for? To tow skiers, of course. Why not? It’s the Scandinavian winter sport of Skijoring. Watch, listen, and enjoy.   The post Watch: 911’s Take to a Frozen Lake appeared first on VWVortex . from VWVortex http://ift.tt/2IAsEU1 via IFTTT

Wagon, V6 Arteons on the Way

Volkswagen’s four-door coupe is getting a wagon version, according to new reports from Europe. The sleek Arteon has only just arrived in Europe, but according to Auto Express , VW has already confirmed that a new version is coming. An estate, a shooting brake, a wagon! According to the report, the design is now signed off on, which means that the car is on the way, which you may recall from our highly professional and not at all done on MS Paint rendering. The same report suggests that a new six-cylinder engine could be coming. VW has already put a V6 in a prototype, and if one goes to production it would have also have to go in the Atlas. Since the Atlas already has a 276 hp 3.6L VR6, it’s most likely that engine that will go back into the Arteon. But with the Arteon’s 2.0L four already offering up to 280 hp, the VR6 might need a boost. The bigger engine is a strange choice of direction when other luxury brands like Volvo are going smaller and electric, but the Arteon is a premium...

The Volkswagen Beetle: Praise for the Underdog

I don’t know if it’s just an American-thing, but we love a great underdog story. Ask your friends what their favorite movies or books are and I bet most center on plucky characters that triumph over all the odds. Rudy , Friday Night Lights , Herbie The Love Bug , A League of Their Own , and even freaking Star Wars are all underdog stories. They make for a great story. And the modern Volkswagen Beetle is a real-life underdog: a quirky little car that somehow comes out on top. By all standards, the Beetle shouldn’t have been successful. I’m not going to go into the history of the original Beetle; there are sites, books, and Wikipedia entries that will tell you all about that. But for those of us old enough to remember the 1980s we remember seeing aircooled Bugs in neighbor’s driveways, in every parking lot, and on highways across the entire United States. We emerged from the backseats of station wagons with black-and-blue marks from a healthy game of “Punch Buggy” (or “Slug Bug” depen...

Volkswagen Atlas 5-passenger concept to be unveiled in New York

Filed under: New York Auto Show , Volkswagen , Crossover , SUV At last year's New York Auto Show, VW's CEO Hinrich Woebcken told reporters that a five-passenger version of the Atlas crossover would spring from a further investment in the company's Tennessee manufacturing plant. And now, VW has confirmed that it's indeed a two-row Atlas that will be produced there, joining the three-row job in the VW lineup. Volkswagen Previews Five-Seat Atlas Variant

As promised, the US is getting another SUV designed specifically for American tastes. The “Five-Passenger Atlas,” as it’s being referred to ahead of a concept reveal at the New York Auto Show next week, is being hailed as a sign of VW’s commitment to the American market. Like the Atlas off of which it’s based, the Five-Passenger Atlas is based on the MQB platform and will be built in Chattanooga. The Atlas, itself designed specifically for America, has been something of a sales hit. Combined, sales of the Atlas, the new Tiguan, and the Tiguan Limited made up more than 50% of VW sales in America in February . Bigger than the Tiguan, this new Atlas variant will likely take over for the Touareg, whose new version it has been reported will not come to the States. “The Atlas has built strong momentum for Volkswagen in the SUV segment, and we are excited to grow our SUV portfolio with this new, Chattanooga-assembled five-passenger SUV,” said Hinrich Woebcken, President VW Group of Ameri...
