Jamie Orr doesn’t take trips like the rest of us. While I’d be lazing on a beach (read: experiencing the wonders of foreign Netflix), he’s shoehorning a VR6 into a Citi Golf. And God bless him for that. The setup was simple. Fly to South Africa, stick a VR6 into what is essentially a Mk1 Golf built in the ’90s, and drive it around South Africa, then ship it to Germany and drive it there, too. Sounds pretty simple, but as is so often the case, actually accomplishing that wasn’t quite so simple. Volkswagen teased a sketch of the all-new third-gen Touareg last week. It won’t launch until later this year, but new details about the crossover have come out. A new report from Motoring Australia has some new info about the new SUV. For a start, it’s getting bigger. About 2.5-inches longer and one inch wider than the second-generation. That puts it on the same wheelbase as the Porsche Cayenne it shares a platform with. The extra length means that the new model will get a third row and add seating for seven for the first time. Despite the size gains expect it to be lighter, by about 140 lbs. Inside, the new Touareg gets what VW calls an Innovision Cockpit. Motoring says that the name isn’t just a rebadged version of the cockpit display like in the current Tiguan, but a curved glass touchscreen that runs up to 28-inches wide. The new RS5 is quite something. But if you’re in the mood for a little more, there’s ABT, the 100-year-old tuning house that’s been making Audis crazier for years. Unfortunately, few people will ever get to see this particular ABT RS5-R, because only 50 have been made. Fortunately, Auditography is on hand to give more people the pleasure of witnessing this beast. Shot high in the Austrian Alps, the video shows the car on startup, takeoff, and whole lot more. Best of all, though, is just the beautiful photography that Auditography is known for. Making 530 hp, ABT managed to squeeze an extra 80 hp out of the already plenty powerful twin-turbo V6. ABT has also given the car an extra 66 lb-ft of torque to bring the total up to over 500 lb-ft. As a result, the RS5-R gets to 60 in just 3.6 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the standard RS5. There was the popular-with-everyone-except-America Golf, the Golf GTI, the Golf SportWagen (and eventually the Golf Alltrack), and the all-electric e-Golf. Being an MQB car, the e-Golf is blessed with sharp reflexes and a tight chassis. Volkswagen engineers worked hard to ensure this model drove as close to its internal-combustion sibling as possible.
