What even is a Beetle? It used to be the people’s car, but nowadays it’s a bit too big, a bit too expensive, and not quite practical enough to really have a claim to that title. So, what’s a Beetle? If you ask me, it’s 100% about style and the Beetle Denim is a sign that Volkswagen has accepted that, too. The idea for the Beetle Denim comes from the annals of Volkswagen history, from a Beetle in 1974 that was called the Jeans Bug. Amazingly, back in the ‘70s jeans had only recently become socially acceptable and the trend was still fresh. Having become cool when James Dean wore them in “Rebel Without a Cause,” jeans were still associated with youth and revolt. By 1974 the Beetle was pretty long in the tooth and so wasn’t above cashing in on the trend to remain relevant. The Jeans Bug was orange with blacked out trim (instead of chrome), a black “jeans” decal on the side, and last but not least denim seat covers. Volkswagen has issued a directive forbidding its employees from playing Pokemon Go. The automaker released a memo on August 9th to its 70 000 employees prohibiting them from playing the game at work or on Volkswagen premises. VW also told employees they weren’t allowed to download the app on their work devices such as smart phones or tablets. The directive also banned employees from taking photos of VW facilities that were not work-related. VW said there were several risks involved in playing Pokemon Go, including privacy concerns about the game’s Geo-Tracking function and the possibility that company information or data could have its security compromised by use of the app. It also warned about the physical danger of playing the game while at work with higher risk of accidents due to distraction. Germany will play host to the World Rally Championship this weekend, and Volkswagen is very happy about that. To celebrate their home rally, they’ve invited some previous champions and a bunch of classic Volkswagens. A static exhibition featuring five historical VWs is the first attraction. The cars will be on the Panzerplatte and they are:  the 2011 Race Touareg, with which Volkswagen won the Rally Dakar for the third time in a row with the driving duo of Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D); the so-called “Rheila-Golf GTI” from 1981, with which Alfons Stock/Paul Schmuck (D/D) won the German Rally Championship; a “Salzburg Beetle”, as was seen in the Group 2 class between 1971 and 1973; the legendary Bi-Motor – Golf GTI, with which Jochi Kleint (D) went in pursuit of the record on Pikes Peak in 1987; and the “A59”, as it is known internally – a prototype based on the Golf, which was designed for the World Rally Championship in 1993 but never actually used. The Flying Spur V8 S, the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, and the first ever tow bar on a Bentley will all be shown for the first time on American soil at Monterey Car Week. The Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase was first shown in China, earlier this year, and is the brand’s premium limousine. Rather than driving it, you’re driven in it. As a result, it’s been designed to remind passengers of traveling first class. It will be shown at the Quail: A Motorsports Gethering on Friday. The Flying Spur V8 S, on the other hand, is designed to be driven. It slots in between the V8 and the W12, and is tuned for performance with more power and a tuned suspension. Then comes the Bentayga, which for the first time in Bentley’s nearly 100 year history, will feature a tow bar. When it came time to make a promotional video for the Bugatti Chiron, the French automaker had one problem. Bugatti didn’t actually have a Chiron to use for its video, so instead, it turned to what it did have: a Veyron. The minds at the SLGH production studio were able to create a fake CG version of the Chiron by capturing video of the Veyron wearing tracking markers all over its body. Interestingly, this is the same Veyron that spy photographers caught testing and assumed was being used as a mule for the upcoming Chiron. In a way it was, but not how we originally assumed.
