Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup

Jordan Lee Pepper crowned champion with fifth victory of the season

The early start paid off for Jordan Lee Pepper. The South African won the second race at the Nürburgring on Sunday morning in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup and was subsequently crowned champion with one weekend of racing still to come. Pepper now has a 50-point lead from Jason Kremer (D) and can no longer be caught due to his larger number of victories this season. One of the first people to congratulate Pepper was compatriot Kelvin van der Linde, who was the Scirocco R-Cup champion in 2013. Second place went to Kremer, who won the first race on Saturday ahead of Pepper and Manuel Fahnauer (D) in third. But second place in the Scirocco R-Cup Championship will be decided during the final race weekend at Hockenheim from 17 – 19 October. Kremer currently lies in second place on 279 points, but Victor Bouveng (S) is just six points behind him in third.

FIA Formula 3 European Championship

Two Volkswagen victories at the Nürburgring

Max Verstapppen (NL) and Antonio Giovinazzi (I) recorded two wins for Volkswagen in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the Nürburgring. Verstappen, son of ex-Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, clinched an impressive victory in the first race on Saturday on a driving surface, which was wet and slippery in places. Giovinazzi crossed the finishing line in third. Verstappen was highly unfortunate during the second race on Sunday just before lunch as he was forced to retire with a technical fault whilst leading the race. The misfortune of the 16-year-old Dutchman handed victory to Volkswagen team-mate Giovinazzi, followed by Tom Blomqvist (GB), who is also “powered by Volkswagen”. During the final race on Sunday afternoon, Blomqvist and Verstappen took places second and third respectively. Esteban Ocon (F) continues to lead the overall standings on 402 points with Verstappen in second on 325 points. Blomqvist currently lies in third with 315 points. The next race weekend in the Formula 3 European Championship will be held from 10 – 12 October in Imola (I).

British Formula 3 Championship

BRITISHF3

Cong drives his way onto the podium twice in Thruxton

Li Zhi Cong (CN) made it onto the podium twice during the tenth race weekend of the British Formula 3 Championship. The Carlin driver “powered by Volkswagen” crossed the finishing line behind Fortec pilots Hongwei Cao (CN) and Matt Rao (GB) in both races at the high-speed circuit. Cong from China now sits in sixth position in the overall standings, whilst his compatriot Martin Cao is the championship leader. The next two races in the British Formula 3 Championship will take place on 30 and 31 August at the classic Brands Hatch racing circuit (GB).

South African Rally Championship

RALLYSA

Lategan/White take fourth place in Gauteng

Henk Lategan/Barry White (both ZA) have finished in fourth place after the fifth event of the South African Rally Championship, the Cullinan Rally in Gauteng. The pair were consistently placed in the top five during the two-day rally and even won one of the twelve Special Stages. The journey to Gauteng also proved worth it for their Volkswagen Sasolracing team-mates. Three other Volkswagen Polo S2000 made it into the top ten with Gugulethu Zulu/Carl Peskin, Thilo Himmel/Armand Du Toit and Hans Weijs Jnr./Bjorn Degandt. The next event in the South African Rally Championship, the Cape Town Rally, gets underway on 19 and 20 September.

2018 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster Review

“Supercars just don’t excite me anymore.” These words, spoken to me over a month ago by another journalist, friend, and (so-called) enthusiast were echoing in my head for far too long, but they’ve finally been drowned out. Drowned out by the wail of a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine mounted in the middle of the new Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster. My friend’s point is that back in the good old days, there was a crop of supercars that captured the imagination with amazing style, sounds, performance, and more. Today, it seems like everything is capable of supercar performance, with large luxury sedans outdoing some of the best and most dedicated teams of car nuts, while former pillars of automotive excellence are suddenly pumping out family-friendly SUVs. Beyond that, another league of supercars, dubbed hypercars have cropped up with hybrid gas-electric powertrains that make magical things happen quickly, but at the cost of the acoustic drama, visual flair, and engag...

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

When we last left you, the humble little SportWagen was fresh from the development process with our friends at AWE Tuning, sporting a new downpipe, exhaust and intake, allowing things to breathe a bit easier.  The car sounded great, but there was no getting around the fact that our wagon was still quite, well, slow.   While we realize that nothing we do to the Golf SportWagen at this point will make it a race car, we still felt compelled to do something .  To put it bluntly, we had a fever, and the only cure was more power. Flash forward a few hours, and we found ourselves at Waterfest, staring down APR’s palatial spread and the numerous tuned vehicles surrounding it.  Earlier in the year, APR had hinted to us that their 1.8 TSI files would be quite impressive, and based on what they were able to do with the 2.0 TSI found in the new GTI and our time in their Golf R, we knew it’d be worth the wait.  So with this in mind, we lined our G...

Project Golf SportWagen- Intro

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers.  The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance. The current crop isn’t terribly good at handling or being efficient, which in my opinion are major components of our ideal driving experience.  So when it comes to space or utility, I usually look for something of the wagon variety- and it seems that I’m not alone. We hit quite a few shows around the east coast each summer, and we see modified Jetta SportWagens at nearly every event. Even amongst common consumers, these cars are highly sought-after. They don’t depreciate much, making even early Mk 5 2.5 versions expensive in comparison to other Jettas or Golfs of the same vintage. This year, Volkswagen launched their latest SportWagen, which is now billed as a Golf.  In many ways, this latest SportWagen is the best yet and it has certai...
