Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

With Volkswagen participating in so many forms of Motorsport around the world, it’s often difficult to keep track of their performance. Luckily for us, Volkswagen Motorsport goes through the trouble of rounding up all of the key information from their various race series, and puts it all in one press release. Let’s get started.

FIA World Rally Championship

Volkswagen celebrates one-two victory at the Rally Poland

Volkswagen duo Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) won the seventh race of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Poland. Andreas Mikkelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N) finished in second place to clinch the one-two victory. This saw Volkswagen continue its impressive winning streak of eleven victories in a row and extend its lead in the manufacturers’ standings to 147 points. Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) finished in fifth place at the rally in Masuria in eastern Poland. Volkswagen rounded off what was already a very successful weekend with the top three spots in the closing power stage. The three Volkswagen drivers are now in the top three spots in the drivers’ standings. Ogier leads with 166 points, Latvala is second (116), Mikkelsen is back in third (83). The next race in the WRC will take place in Finland from 31 July to 3 August.

Foust secures first victory of the season for Marklund Motorsport in Kouvola

At the fourth race of the season in the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Kouvola, Finland, Tanner Foust (USA) secured the first victory of the season for him and his team Marklund Motorsport. In the final, Foust, in his Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar, asserted himself over Andreas Bakkerud (N/Ford) on the track covering almost a kilometre in the south of Finland. His team-mate Anton Marklund (S) finished second behind Foust in the semi-final, and ended the final in fifth place. This saw the Swede repeat his highest position of the season to date. Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen (FIN), the third driver in the Marklund Motorsport team, missed out on the final. However, with 74 points and in fourth place overall in the championship, Heikkinen is still the strongest driver for the Marklund Motorsport team. Marklund (61) and Foust (42) follow in positions five and eight. The fifth race of the season will be held in the Höljes Motorstadion in Sweden from 5 to 6 July.

Ahlin-Kottulinsky makes Scirocco R-Cup history

Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky (S) became the first woman to win a race in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup. At the Norisring in Nuremberg (D), the 21-year-old crossed the finish line in first place after a turbulent race. Moritz Oberheim (D) finished second, 1.3 seconds behind Ahlin-Kottulinsky, in third place came Jordan Lee Pepper (ZA), who extended his lead in the overall standings further. The race took place on a wet track and had to be stopped for one and a half hours after a serious accident involving Yann Ehrlacher. The young Frenchman lost control of his Cup-Scirocco on the second lap and went smashing into the crash barriers. Ehrlacher walked away from the accident unscathed. The race had to be stopped for one and a half hours while the track was cleared. Ahlin-Kottulinsky, who started from second on the grid and took the lead shortly after, defended her lead right to the finish line. The next race in the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup will be held in Spielberg (A) from 1 to 3 August.

Verstappen celebrates his sixth successive victory at the Norisring

There was no beating Max Verstappen (NL) at the Norisring (D). On the sixth race weekend in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, the Dutchman, just 16 years of age, crossed the finish line in first place in all three races – and in extremely difficult conditions. Two of the three races took place on a rain-soaked track. Numerous incidents called for a total of six safety-car periods. The driver from the Van Amersfoort Racing team, son of former Formula 1 driver Jos Verstappen, kept his nerve in all three races and, after his three recent victories in Spa-Franchorchamps (B), delivered another flawless weekend in Nuremberg. The rookie “powered by Volkswagen” reduced the gap between him and championship leader Esteban Ocon (F) in the overall standings by 39 points; Ocon is top of the table with 304 points. Verstappen (230) is currently in second place. The next three races in the Formula 3 European Championship will be held in Moscow from 11 to 13 July.

Debut victory for Krivospickiy at the White Nights Rally in Karelia

Mikhail Krivospickiy and Marina Glushkova (RUS/RUS) won the fourth rally event of the season and celebrated their first victory in the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia. The Russian duo secured victory at the 50th edition of the White Nights Rally in Karelia, ahead of Arkadiy Bogomolov (RUS) and Vladimir Melnikov (RUS). Krivospickiy and Glushkova benefited from an error made by Alexey Ignatov, who won the first three races of the season and also led for much of the time in Karelia. Ignatov lost 17 minutes on the final special stage, and with them, the victory. Ignatov’s main rival Vadim Lelyuh (RUS) was caught out on the second of a total of eleven stages covering 124 kilometres. The next rally in the Volkswagen Polo Cup Russia will be held in Strugi Krasnye from 11 to 12 July.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as

Waterfest Moves to Atco Dragway

Waterfest 24 will be held at Atco Dragway, in Atco, New Jersey. The summer event will take place at its new venue on July 21 and 22. Long held in Englishtown, New Jersey, the festival has been such a large part of the VW scene that the latest iteration of the Golf even comes with optional “Englishtown” wheels . The new venue, however, is an NHRA drag track a scant 52 miles southwest of Englishtown. The ¼ mile drag track opened in 1960, which makes it the oldest drag strip in New Jersey. The announcement came today on a social media post that announced the new location. Waterfest is North America’s largest VW/Audi show. As many 20,000 people show up for the annual show, making the second largest show in the world—with Worthersee being number one. 2018 will be Waterfest’s 24 th year in existence.
