For all the attention that Top Gear gets, its cousin Fifth Gear was also doing some pretty good televisual automotive journalism. As was the case here, when it tested a Mk2 Golf GTI, a Lupo GTI, and a Mk4 Golf R as part of its Second Hand Heroes segment.
The three cars are compared as a cheap alternative to a brand new Golf GTI and there’s a lot of useful information about what to look for when buying used.
Although the Lupo’s segment is kind of academic for us Americans—mind you it does look like a fun car—Jason Plato covers what you should be looking for and what you should be wary of when buying any of these cars.
The Golf R’s diff, for instance, requires frequent servicing, so be careful if you hear any nasty sounds coming from back there, says segment host Jason Plato.
Even if you aren’t in the market for one of these cars, the segment is both informative for anyone buying second hand, and as a piece of classic VW fascination.
Check it out, then check out our classifieds section to see if there’s an alternative to the modern Golf that you’re interested in.
