Despite its new freedom and willingness to rename vehicles, Volkswagen of America has no interest in renaming the Arteon when it comes in the US, according to Michael Lovati, VP of Full and Midsize Vehicles at VW of America.
The company has been accused of choosing names that are either displeasing or difficult for American ears—see Touareg. VW of America president Hinrich Woebcken, though, has made a big deal about how the freedom afforded to VWoA by the newly minted North American Region, allowed it renamed the Atlas (née: Terramont).
Lovati, though, at the recent launch event for the Atlas, dismissed the notion that VW would do the same to the Arteon. Asked if the name would change he simply shook his head and said “no.”
Having debuted at the Geneva Motor Show recently, the Arteon combines the rakish lines of a coupe with the practicality of a four-door sedan. Although VW maintains that the new product will go upmarket, competing with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, comparisons to the outgoing CC are hard to avoid.
The name Arteon, says VW, comes from a combination of the word “art” with the “eon” suffix that graces its Chinese luxury car, the Phideon.
