The next member of the I.D. all-electric family is on its way and Volkswagen has released the first teaser images.
The MEB-based crossover will debut at Auto Shanghai next week, and according to VW it will bridge the gap between crossovers and SUVs.
That’s because, much like the I.D.–which is the same size as a Golf outside, but has as much space as a Passat inside–the new I.D. crossover will be small outside and big inside thanks to MEB platform.
Without a big engine taking up room up front, cabin space can expand. And with all of its batteries organized way down low, the center of gravity is very low.
Moreover, with all wheel drive, the I.D. crossover will be as comfortable on the road as it is off it.
Again like the I.D. concepts that precede it, the new crossover will have a retracting steering wheel that gets out of the way in case you would prefer for your car to drive itself.
The concept is of particular relevance here, as VW recently told us that America’s first wave of electric vehicles would include a compact SUV, much like this one.
