Volkswagen is set to debut an all new concept car based on the all-electric MEB platform at the Frankfurt auto show in September. Another addition to the I.D. family, the sedan will show the breadth of VW’s electric ambitions.
The new sedan will surprise, VW design chief Klaus Bischoff told Autocar, adding that there were details that wowed even his colleagues the first time they saw it.
The model will be the fourth in a line of concepts based on the MEB platform, which VW touts as a flexible, multi-use platform in much the same way that the MQB platform can be used to make everything from the Golf to the Atlas.
To wit, Volkswagen has shown now that the MEB platform can be the basis for a small hatchback (the I.D.), a van (the I.D. Buzz), and a sedan. The MEB platform will also underpin an SUV that’s expected to debut at the Shanghai Motor Show next month.
Each model says Bischoff will have its own body style and identity (I.D., if you will), says Bischoff, but they will all share a “no-grille” philosophy.
“Volkswagen was born with no grille,” he told Autocar. “With ID, we’re looking into the future but have our original identity with a closed front end.”
