For all its excellence, the Corrado wasn’t a big success. Only lasting a few years, it was a critical darling, but a sales flop. As Mr. Regular explains, it was a little too weird for mainstream audiences, but too good to be forgotten.
Much like Swiss Army Man, the Volkswagen Corrado was inaccessible to many, but worth the effort, because the result is excellent.
Designed to fight the Porsche 944, the Corrado looked sleeker and meaner than a GTI and packed the performance to back it up. Sadly, most people would only see it as a less practical GTI, not as a unique vehicle in its own right.
Eventually gaining the now legendary VR6 engine, the Corrado became a quiet killer, out-accelerating its competition in a 1992 Car and Driver test.
And it wasn’t just a one trick pony. Along with the acceleration came some tail-out fun and excellent driving dynamics. It should all have been a recipe for success, but once again the world proved that enthusiasts and everyday drivers don’t have the same priorities and another excellent car was lost to the almighty dollar.
It’s sad, sure, but there are still good examples out there, so you still have the power to find one and save it from the ravages of age.
