VW’s Müller Calls Out Tesla at Conference

Speaking at a conference in Germany yesterday, VW’s CEO was surprisingly frank when it came to smaller EV companies, Tesla in particular. Matthias Müller was speaking at “Menschen in Europe,” an event that calls itself a “forum for international understanding.” The event has talks on topics ranging from business to politics to arts and culture. Müller was invited to speak about the car industry. The moderator asked about Tesla, and Müller had something to say: “Now I really need to say a few words about Tesla: With all due respect, there are some world champions of big announcements in this world – I don’t want to name names. There are companies that barely sell 80,000 cars a year. Then there are companies like Volkswagen that sell 11 million cars this year, and produce a profit of 13 or 14 billion euro. If I am correctly informed, Tesla each quarter destroys millions of dollars in the three digits, and it willy-nilly fires its workers. Social responsibility? Please. We should not g...

This is the Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster 50th Anniversary Japan

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] This year marks the 50th year since Lamborghini first began selling its cars in Japan. The Italian manufacturer has marked the special occasion with the debut of the Aventador S Roadster 50th Anniversary Japan. Limited to just five units, the special edition Aventador S Roadsters will each feature different exterior and interior colors and contents. Each car will be inspired by one of the five natural elements of Japanese culture: water, earth, fire, wind, and sky. The cars will feature special fading effects in the paint meant to evoke the element it is inspired by. In the case of the water Aventador S Roadster, the blue exterior paint fades to black. Lamborghini says the artisan paintwork required 170 hours of labor for each vehicle, and the contribution of 10 paint specialists. The interiors will comprise Nero Ade black leather and Nero Cosmus black Alcantara, along with unique seat embroidery, and stitching that fades in the same fashio...

Spend a Night in the World’s Smallest* Hotel

Last week we featured a video of a YouTuber hacking up a Golf to make the world’s smallest working Golf now we’ve found a hollowed out Beetle that’s (probably not) the world’s smallest hotel room. Although the fine fellas at Guinness disagree, this Beetle is undoubtedly a tiny place to spend the night. One that you might want to spend in. Located deep in the Jordanian desert near Al Jaya, up to two people can spend the night in this love bug for $56—and that includes a breakfast or lunch. اصغر فندق في العالم موجود في #الشوبك #زوروا_الأردن لتعيشوا تجربة سياحية مدهشة تتنوع بين البوادي والارياف والمدن. #حب_الأردن http://pic.twitter.com/bYSGoR0Ab5 — Ayham Otoom (@AyhamOtoom) January 17, 2017 Started in 2011, this hotel room features hand-embroidered sheets and pillows and… not much else. It is a Beetle after all, so fitting anything more than a bed is a challenge. World-renowned Beetle-sleuth Jason Torchinsky figures that this a ’73, though that’s a guess because quite a few bo...

Ratty Rescue: Mk2urbo

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] One man’s abandoned project can be another man’s gain. In today’s Ratty Rescue, we take a look at an unfinished pile of potential and hope that someone comes and rescues this gem. There’s magic in three little letters. Any Volkswagen hatch with GTI on the tailgate is a ton of fun. From it’s inception, the engineers in Wolfsburg took a basic car and turned it into something special. But many a young man or woman has looked upon the already great car and has dreamed of taking it further. This is one such car. Before we go on, this car is a bit of a mystery. The current owner, a VWVortex member, states there’s not much he knows about the car. So let’s start with the obvious: the owner dumped the original 8V engine and bolted in a high-revving 1.8L 16 valve unit. Not a bad start. The previous owner then added a turbocharger and a large intercooler. Now we’re talking, right? This is all bolted up to a stout 2Y 16V transmission. Additionally, the...
