International Engine of the Year Award 2014: TSI Technology a Serial Winner

Prestigious accolade goes for the ninth time in succession to twin-charged TSI from Volkswagen TSI technology from Volkswagen today once again received the ‘International Engine of the Year Award’: the 1.4 litre TSI twincharger, which won for the ninth time in succession in the 1.0 to 1.4 litre cubic capacity category, is thus the most successful engine in the history of this international competition for engine technology. For several years, the pithy TSI brand has stood for intelligent downsizing from Volkswagen. Despite their comparatively small cubic capacity the TSI engines produce, for instance, levels of power output that until not so very long ago only engines with a considerably bigger capacity were able to offer. The TSI engine is currently available in differing cubic capacity classes and levels of power output ranging between 66 kW / 90 PS and 221 kW / 300 PS. The first TSI engine was in 2006 the twincharger, now once again an award winner, which thanks to an additional t...

Beetle Dune Going to Production?

So it would seem… Last week Volkswagen AG put out a press release rehashing the Beetle Dune concept but cryptically saying that is a “conceivable” as a production model. Since there was no new information and it just seemed like an attempt to gather more press for a vehicle that was already shown six plus months ago, we didn’t think anything of it. Then we found this video on the Volkswagen AG Media website: The voiceover in the video says the Beetle Dune is coming in 2016 in both coupe and convertible forms. Since we already know that the Beetle and Jetta 6 share similar platforms that don’t support AWD that would mean a Beetle Dune would be FWD only. Which begs the question… Why make an off-road looking Dune with FWD? A FWD Beetle R makes more sense to us. No word from VWoA on all of this and we’ll keep you posted. Volkswagen Now a Member of the Google-Based Open Automotive Alliance (OAA)

By joining the OAA, Volkswagen is forging even closer links with the IT industry Volkswagen is now a member of the Open Automotive Alliance. The news was announced at this year’s Google I/O developers’ conference in San Francisco. The Open Automotive Alliance is a grouping of leading technology and vehicle manufacturers whose aim is the seamless integration of Android devices into cars. The OAA defines the Android Auto interface as the standard for integrating Android devices. Android Auto is the next step in connectivity, linking smart phones and tablets to the infotainment system in the vehicle. Android Auto makes it possible for smart phone content to be displayed on the vehicle infotainment system quickly and easily and intuitively used. Operation of the Android app is specifically optimised to the needs of the driver. That simplifies the interaction between driver, vehicle and smart phone and thus reduces any possible distraction of the driver from what’s happening on the road. V...

Mk2 Resto Project – Getting to the Bottom of things

“Everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the face.” Iron Mike had a point, for sure, as we learned during the teardown phase of our mk2 restoration project. We had planned on being able to disassemble the car, sort & catalog the parts to be refreshed or replaced later, and immediately get to work on prepping the GTI to be repainted. As with most projects, however, that was far easier said than done. Pulling the engine and transmission was probably the easiest part of the teardown. Since we have a freshly rebuilt engine to put back into the car—along with a complete GTI wiring harness from our $400 donor car—we were able to cut and yank the wires out of the car with almost reckless abandon. Removing the doors and glass went fairly smoothly as well, and being able to pull and dispose of the rather nasty smelling interior bits was a genuine pleasure. But then the plan went to hell with the “punch in our face” coming in the form of a rusted-out floor, hidden body damage, and a sag...

Golf GTE Variant?

Things that make you go hmmm…. One of our eagle-eyed readers in our Car Lounge forum (Ark6) spotted this parked outside San Francisco Airport this past weekend: A Golf GTE Variant. So what? Well, Volkswagen hasn’t announced or shown an eGolf Variant, let alone a GTE Variant, so this is something new we haven’t seen before and VW hasn’t announced. Now, having said that, we’re not the least bit surprised that VW would plan for an eGolf Variant. A GTE Variant however, is pushing the envelope a little more for VW, as a performance electric version of the eGolf Variant probably wouldn’t sell in big numbers. We are happy to see VW playing around with these ideas though and hope they decide to offer it. No comment from VWoA so far, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed. Volkswagen Motorsport International Newsletter

Classifying Volkswagen’s participation in Motorsport as “widespread” is an understatement. With Volkswagens participating in so many different series, it’s hard to keep track of all of the action. Luckily, Volkswagen Motorsport has put together a roundup of all the key action from the past few weeks including news from ATS Formula 3 Cup, Volkswagen Castrol Cup, Fun Cup Belgium, and FIA World Rally Championship. Let’s get started. World Rallycross Championship- Vital points for Heikkinen and Marklund Global Rallycross champion Toomas “Topi” Heikkinen (FIN) and team-mate Anton Marklund (S) narrowly missed out on the final featuring the best six drivers at the third event of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, but they did strengthen their positions in the overall classification. The two Marklund Motorsport drivers both finished fourth in their respective semi-final runs in Hell, Norway, where third place would have been enough for a place in the final. Two Volkswagen RX Supercars ...
