Making it to the Nurburgring these days is as much a pilgrimage for car fans as it is a chance to drive. That’s why so many cars are on track at any given moment, and why you can have great moments like this one.
The video above shows a Golf Mk2 turbo, built by one Nigel Pinder, driving the ‘ring, allegedly going toe to toe with Chris Harris in a 911 GT3 RS.
Although there’s no question that the Porsche is quicker car, it takes it most of the lap to catch the Golf and afterwards can’t quite pull away in the twisty bits.
“I catch [another] Porsche going up Kesselchen at a really inconvenient point,” writes Pinder in the video description. “Rather than try and force my way past and also slow the car behind, I tucked in, let the 991 [piloted by Harris] past then tagged onto him for the rest of the lap.”
After the lap, Pinder had a chat with the driver of the GT3 RS.
“When I went to talk to the driver afterwards,” he explains, “it turned out to be Chris who was rather surprised it took him so long to catch a Golf designed in the 1980s in a new GT3RS.”
Pinder has experience on the Nurburgring, having recorded a handful of videos there, and the car is pretty heavily modified, but still, keeping up with a modern supercar that many would argue is the pinnacle of automotive design is pretty impressive.
