With the 40th anniversary of the GTI coming quickly, many people are looking back on the car’s history. Carfection’s Alex Goy has assembled one of each generation of Golf GTI and tested them back to back to decide which he likes best.
Goy praises every generation, saying he’d be happy with any of them, but one comes out on top: the Mk5.
“The Mk5 is a highlight,” says Goy. He praises it for its steering and its gear changes, but he says “the engine is my favorite bit.” It sounds nice, moves the car well, and the turbo is great. Many people, he remembers, called it the best car they had ever driven when it came out.
The Mk1, 2, 6, and 7 also garner praise from Goy for being fun and practical. “People say that hot hatch XYZ is quicker,” he explains, “but that’s not the point. It’s about being just right.” And they are.
Not every version of the car is praised, though. Goy makes it no secret that his least favorite models are the Mk3 and 4. He admits that they may be quick, but they commit the cardinal GTI sin of not being fun.
Regardless of how much you may agree with Goy, or how deeply you disagree, it’s fun to watch all seven GTIs on track and to be reminded of how good the GTI really is. Let us know which is your favorite GTI in comments.
