Chattanooga Builds its First Midsize SUV Test Body

Volkswagen has reached a production milestone at its Chattanooga assembly plant, having built its first metal test body for the upcoming midsize SUV. The new model is scheduled to begin full production later this year and reaching showrooms in early 2017.

Plants need to build metal bodies like these to test the calibration of the body shop equipment, so this is considered an important step in the road to full production.

VW Chattanooga celebrated the milestone with a group picture that included management, body shop team members, and the new midsize SUV body.

I’ve never really been one for SUVs and crossovers. The current offerings aren’t the body-on-frame, go-anywhere specialty tools I remember from my youth, and what they lack in capability, they also lack in on-road performance.
