Team Leopard Racing have come to grips with their new Golf GTI TCR. This weekend at Spa they claimed all three steps on the podium in the TCR International Series’ second race.
Last weekend was the third round of the series, in which the GTI TCR made its debut earlier this year. Every race weekend, the series runs two qualifying sessions and two races, which this weekend were nine laps long.
The first race was not an especially good race for the Golfs, but by the time the second race started the team was firing on all cylinders.
Starting from the top of the grid, the team’s three drivers led from the start. Anti Buri, started on pole, but his race didn’t quite go to plan, and he finished the race in third. Jean-Karl Vernay, meanwhile, started second and leapfrogged Buri to finish the race on the top step. And Stefano Comini started in third and made up one sport to finish in second.
Vernay’s win was big for him, as it was his first ever TCR victory. “What can I say except that I am very happy to have brought Leopard and Volkswagen a first win,” he said after the race.
Owning the podium bodes well for Leopard Racing, who have strong drivers in Comini, Vernay, and Buri. Despite a shaky start to the season, Comini and Vernay are in fifth and sixth places respectively, in the driver’s standings. Leopard Racing, meanwhile, is in third place among teams.
The team heads to Imola in two weeks, for the next round of the TCR International Series on May 22.
