The team at Volkswagen Motorsport are the current experts at building rally cars. Having won last year’s World Rally Championship and leading this year’s handily, they team seem to have a handle on going fast with low grip.
One of the keys to that success appears to be getting an early start, because they’ve already been spied testing next year’s WRC Polo R. The car is even wider than this year’s, and based on the teaser Volkswagen Motorsport released it should also have more downforce.
60 more power is also on the menu, thanks to the new regulations, as is less weight (55 fewer pounds). So this car has the motorsport trifecta: more power, more downforce, less weight.
And the result looks really fast. Of course, that shouldn’t be surprising. It’s been designed by the current best WRC team on earth and driven by one of the best rally drivers on earth, Jari Matti Latvala. Still, though, the way it handles these tiny French roads and changes directions on the swithbacks is impressive.
Young heartthrob, Andreas Mikkelsen, was also testing the car a few days earlier. Watch that video below.
