New Škoda Superb GreenLine Goes More Than 1,100 Miles on a Single Tank

The ultra-efficient capabilities of TDI-powered Volkswagen Group vehicles is certainly nothing new, but the sheer amount of models in which the group employs this technology is nothing short of remarkable.  With the new Škoda Superb Greenline, the group’s 1.6 TDI is capable of achieving an incredible 76.4mpg, while emitting just 96g/km of CO2 emissions- allowing the car to travel 1100 miles between trips to the pump.  To help make the car even more efficient, a unique aerodynamic package and 15mm lower ride height lowers the GreenLine’s drag coefficient, and low rolling resistance rubber works with longer gear ratios to ensure that little effort is wasted.  The car will debut next month in Frankfurt, and go on sale later this year.

  • New ŠKODA Superb GreenLine is the cleanest and most efficient Superb ever
  • 1.6 TDI 120PS engine returns 76.4mpg and emits just 96g/km of CO2 (Hatch)
  • Optimised aerodynamics and engine modifications deliver improved efficiency
  • World debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show – arrives in UK late 2015

Milton Keynes: ŠKODA is set to add to its acclaimed GreenLine range with its most advanced and efficient model to date – the new Superb GreenLine. The latest addition to the recently-launched Superb range takes fuel economy and emissions to a new level, with a predicted combined consumption figure of 76.4mpg and CO2 emissions of just 96g/km for the Hatch and 97g/km for the Estate. These provide the new Superb GreenLine with a potential range of more than 1,100 miles on just one tank of fuel– comfortably enough to drive from Milton Keynes to Barcelona.

The new Superb GreenLine will be unveiled to the public at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show and will be available in the UK later this year. The newcomer – which is the most fuel-efficient and cleanest Superb ever built – is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that develops 120PS and incorporates a host of advanced fuel-saving technologies and engineering features. As with all other Superb models, the GreenLine is equipped with start-stop ignition and brake energy recovery as standard. In addition, both Superb GreenLine models feature longer gear ratios, SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and 16-inch reduced rolling resistance tyres.

To meet strict European emission standards, the Superb utilises two exhaust gas treatment units: an oxidation catalytic converter and a diesel particulate filter. Nitrogen oxide emissions are reduced through the Superb GreenLine’s SCR system, using the reducing agent AdBlue. This synthetically manufactured solution, 32.5% high-purity urea in demineralised water, treats the diesel exhaust gases, reducing nitrogen oxide and saving fuel.

To further improve efficiency, the Superb GreenLine has been engineered with a unique aerodynamic package. The chassis sits 15mm lower than the standard Superb, while both the Hatchback and Estate models incorporate tailgate and roof spoilers to efficiently channel air  around the rear of the car. As a result of these subtle additions and revisions, both models have lower drag coefficients than the standard models (0.263 Hatch, 0.275 Estate).

ŠKODA’s commitment to developing highly efficient, eco-friendly cars remains as strong as ever. All ŠKODA models are now available with the latest EU6 compliant petrol and diesel engines. Further details about the Superb GreenLine, including UK specification and prices, will be announced closer to the launch later this year.

Review: Saying Goodbye to the CC V6

For all its size and its global reach, Volkswagen is still, in many ways, a deeply human company. There was, for instance, the Bugatti Veyron an ego project if ever there was one. Then the purchase of Ducati, a move most called folly. And then there was the Phaeton, the Volkswagen that most folks can’t afford. Not only were these moves all strange, I’m sure that they made VW’s accountants furious. None of them made good business sense, but they were all deeply interesting and they all are evidence of the heart that beats at the center of VW. Among these follies is the CC, a car that everyone agrees is rakishly handsome, but that no one really wanted to buy. The car couldn’t last, but the world is brighter for its having been in it. With the approach debut of the Arteon, it seems like a good time to look back on its sadly departing predecessor. The version I drove, because I live in Canada, is a V6 Wolfsburg Edition, which apparently isn’t available in the States. Nor is the V6, not as...

T-Prime Makes World Premiere at Beijing

[ See image gallery at www.vwvortex.com ] The SUV segment is one of the fastest growing segments in the world and Volkswagen is showing the world how to do it. With the new T-Prime Concept GTE that was revealed today, the company is showing off all of the technology you can look for in its coming models. The T-Prime is a full-size hybrid SUV that can go up to 31 miles on a charge and gets 87 mpg. The hybrid power station is good for 375 hp and 516 lb/ft of torque and puts the power down with 4MOTION all wheel drive. It’ll get you up to 60 in six seconds. The concept’s real party piece, though, is its interior, which features exclusively touch, gesture, and voice controls. Everything from the infotainment, to the display, and even the gears are controlled by touch-screen. The T-Prime Concept GTE is bigger than the Touareg, and design elements are likely to find their way into all of their SUVs, of which there will be many. Volkswagen is also announcing that they expect to make an S...

Watch: The Transport Does a Whole Hell of a lot More than Transport

Petrolicious doesn’t only feature million-dollar classics, it also features the more generally neat, like this 1996 T4 Transporter that became Instagram famous and started and is starting an empire. Callum Creaser’s T4 started life as a panel van, but over the years it has become a homebrew camper van that has gone on adventures around the world. After posting about his adventures to Instagram, the diesel van gained a following and launched The Rolling Home, a series about other people’s small spaces and homey cars. Based on a 1.4-liter diesel with no ECU, Callum says his T4 is easy as pie to work on since information is widely available from sources like ours.
