Speed is really about perspective. Driving a go-kart at 30 mph feels much faster than flying in a plane at 300 mph. So when you’re driving the Volkswagen ID, by which of course I mean the only ID, 25 mph feels like plenty, according to Carfection’s Alex Goy.
Goy had the chance to drive the ID around on the streets to experience first hand what the electric future holds and, by his own admission, he’s impressed.
As we all know the ID is Volkswagen’s concept for an electric car designed on an all electric platform. Unlike the e-Golf, the I.D. was designed from the ground up to be an electric car. That means that VW’s interior designers can take full advantage of a passenger compartment without any drivetrain intrusions.
As a result, says VW, the interior is effectively an empty into which designers can put anything they want and volume on par with a Passat from a car the size of a Golf. The result, says Goy, is lovely.
Although this a pie-in-the-sky concept, the cabin feels bright and airy, with lots of good ideas, like a touch sensitive steering wheel and headlights that inform pedestrians of what’s going on. Goy admits that it’s a little “wobbly,” but with some of that German quality applied to a production equivalent, it could be great.
