VW Debuts Summer Enthusiast Fleet

The mercury’s rising and the project cars are coming out of hibernation. If you’re anything like us, you’re as excited to let your tires hit the pavement as you are to see all the great cars that have been hiding in garages.

So you’ll be excited to hear that VW’s back this summer with a fleet of five cars specially modified for duty at this summer’s car shows.

The first, we’ve already seen. Tanner Foust’s SEMA Atlas is an overlanding concept that takes the already assertive Atlas and butches it right up with aggressive tires, flared wheel arches, a raised bumper, light bars, and a ladder onto the top of the SUV, where a roof rack will allow you to pack everything you need for a night under the stars.

“Overlanding has risen in popularity in the past couple of years,” said Tanner Foust. “People are looking for ways to get outdoors and go on adventure trips with the whole family. The Atlas is perfect for off-pavement trips, and I wanted this concept to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities while still maintaining its utility and VW DNA.”

The second car, meanwhile, is more standard car show fare, albeit with a twist. The 2018 Golf R Abstract concept pairs 20-inch FR design wheels in Mystic Black (from ABT Sportsline), H&R Springs Sport Springs (to lower the car an inch), stainless quad exhausts (with matte black chrome tips), and more with a camouflage print wrap that takes cues from street art from Wynwood Art District in Miami. Inside, the car has a BAK Performance Mk7 custom fiber wheel complete Golf R blue stitching.

VW has followed that up with a 2019 Jetta R-Line SoCal concept. This one takes the brand new Jetta and makes it special by taking a look back at the Jetta’s history. The graphics are a nod to the Mk2 Jetta, while fluorescent yellow mirror caps, the gloss black roof (with geodesic fluorescent yellow design), and the body-color wheels all highlight the Jetta’s new look.

Developed in partnership with fifteen52, the concept is all about clean lines and aggressive stance thanks to its KW prototype ST XTA Coil Overs with adjustable top mounts that lower the Jetta three inches and show off the fifteen52 Formula GT 19- x 8.5-inch wheels.

VW has plied its trade on another SUV, too. The 2018 Tiguan R-Line Aero concept sits on Air Lift Performance’s 3P Air Management System with Performance Series front and rear struts. All of that lowers the Tiguan by up to 4.8 inches, making it the most lowered of all the cars in the enthusiast fleet.

Powder-coated, matte black Rotiform 20-inch Monoblock CCV wheels and a Thule Motion XT Alpine rooftop carrier finish off the look.

And finally, VW has modified the most refined vehicle in the lineup, the Arteon. The 2019 Arteon R-Line Highlight concept rocks a set of 20 x 9.5 inch Vossen Hybrid Forged HF-2 wheels and sits nice and low thanks to Ultra Low Coil Overs from H&R Springs. These drop the car by nearly three inches and an ultra-fluorescent yellow wrap with gloss black and chrome accents ensure that no one misses the car in traffic.

You can catch the concept fleet around the country. The cars will making stops at:

Project SportWagen: Going Stage 2 with APR

When we last left you, the humble little SportWagen was fresh from the development process with our friends at AWE Tuning, sporting a new downpipe, exhaust and intake, allowing things to breathe a bit easier.  The car sounded great, but there was no getting around the fact that our wagon was still quite, well, slow.   While we realize that nothing we do to the Golf SportWagen at this point will make it a race car, we still felt compelled to do something .  To put it bluntly, we had a fever, and the only cure was more power. Flash forward a few hours, and we found ourselves at Waterfest, staring down APR’s palatial spread and the numerous tuned vehicles surrounding it.  Earlier in the year, APR had hinted to us that their 1.8 TSI files would be quite impressive, and based on what they were able to do with the 2.0 TSI found in the new GTI and our time in their Golf R, we knew it’d be worth the wait.  So with this in mind, we lined our G...

Volkswagen’s Gone to California with Grand California Camper

Volkswagen is bringing the California XXL concept to production. It will debut at the Dusseldorf Caravan Salon as the Grand California. It’s set to be based on the medium wheelbase Crafter van. That’s the company’s full-size commercial van, larger than the T6 Transporter based California. The high roof means room for adults to stand up, though it won’t get the concept’s extended length. The Grand California offers a full wet bathroom. It’s not exactly spacious, though, measuring in at around 31.5 x 33-inches. A toilet, shower, and sink are all crammed into that space, but at least there are motion sensor lights to stop you from reaching for a switch. Standard, the Grand California it comes with berths for two adults. Space for two children is optional, but they’ll be stuck in a berth amove the driver’s area. The kitchen offers a sink, stove, and two fridges. The front seats swivel to add seating space when the RV is parked. It’s also got solar panels, an integrated satellite dish,...
